MCAA National Update for May 14, 2012
THANKS TO H.T. LYONS, VICTAULIC FOR HOSTING 2012 PRE-FAB CONFERENCE
MCAA's 2012 Pre-Fab Conference, which took place in Bethlehem, PA, provided an excellent hands-on educational experience for 103 contractors interested in learning how the best mechanical contractors are using state-of-the-art pre-fabrication operations to improve project management and productivity. Hosted by members H.T. Lyons, Inc. (Allentown, PA) and Victaulic (Easton, PA), the conference was an eye-opener for attendees. H.T. Lyons President Rick Perosa and Vice President Roeland Hoeke showed attendees how to utilize their expertise in engineering, estimating, CAD/BIM, modularization and safety to secure their market success. Victaulic Executive Vice President Gary Moore showed contractors how to use lean manufacturing concepts to improve their fabrication processes. Attendees also toured Victaulic's state of the art foundry. MCAA sincerely thanks H.T. Lyons and Victaulic for graciously hosting this year's conference.
LEARN HOW WATER AUDITS CAN IMPROVE YOUR BOTTOM LINE
For plumbing contractors, water auditing is a powerful driver for creating new business, customer trust and repeat clients. By assessing a facility's water use, contractors can use their product and estimating expertise to calculate for owners how much water, sewer and hot water generation costs they can expect to save. On June 7, the Plumbing Contractors of America is sponsoring a seminar in Boston, MA to help you learn more about and establish water auditing as a profitable enterprise for your business. You will gain the knowledge and tools necessary to perform your own water audits. You will learn how to audit a facility and estimate its water (and associated sewer and hot water fuel) savings, utilizing a cutting-edge payback estimating spreadsheet, and how to make the sale to building owners in a final water audit report.  The seminar will also show you which building types, systems and fixtures have better payback periods (and which ones do not) and you will learn about other key indicators to successful jobs. The program and registration details are online at www.mcaa.org/education. Please contact MCAA's Sean McGuire (smcguire@mcaa.org) with questions.
WHAT'S YOUR BUILDING'S BEQ?
Ever Tried a Webinar? If you're not sure what that is, then be sure to participate in MCAA's next Green Building Webinar on the ASHRAE Building Energy Quotient Program, June 14 at 1:00 p.m. Eastern time. ASHRAE will soon launch a new program to inform owners and operators, tenants and prospective buyers about how much energy buildings use. The Building Energy Quotient (BEQ) program is similar to the nutrition label on packaged foods and the miles per gallon rating for cars. It will include an operational rating for commercial buildings and will provide users with a simplified way to measure and compare building efficiencies. Tim Wentz, associate professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and ASHRAE vice president, will lead the webinar. This webinar is free as a benefit of MCAA/MSCA membership; please register at https://mcaa.webex.com.
REGISTER ONLINE FOR BIM FOR MECHANICAL CONTRACTORS COURSES
Plan to attend the new courses in MCAA's BIM for Mechanical Contractors series (October 1-2 in Kansas City, MO). The courses are designed to bring you up to date on the key issues surrounding this dynamic process for coordinating the construction of buildings. And, we've lined up the experts to run them. On October 1, David Morris (EMCOR's Director of Virtual Construction) and Frank Musica (Senior Risk Management Attorney for Victor O. Schinnerer & Company, Bethesda, MD) will team up to lead the BIM Contracts & Risk Allocation course. On October 2, Morris is the lead instructor on the course, BIM Process & Technology Implementation.  Once again, CNA Insurance and TSI are co-sponsoring the courses; CNA is sponsoring the Day 1 contracts and risk allocation course, and TSI is sponsoring the Day 2 BIM process and technology course.  A $295 rebate will be offered after the courses to attendees of both courses. And, the online registration process makes signing up easier than ever! NOTE:  All courses in the BIM for Mechanical Contractors series are "MEP friendly," so SMACNA and NECA members can register at MCAA member rates.   For more information and to register, go to http://www.mcaa.org/education or contact MCAA's Dennis Langley (dlangley@mcaa.org).
DEADLINE FOR STUDENT INTERNSHIP GRANTS IS HERE

MCAA's Career Development Committee is making available grants with funding provided by the Mechanical Contracting Education & Research Foundation (MCERF). MCAA/MSCA members who hire student interns may qualify for one $1,200 grant to help them offset the intern's salary. The student gains experience working in our industry and his/her employer benefits from the student's energy, fresh perspective, knowledge about new technologies and much more. Everyone wins!
