MCAA MEMBERS MADE A DIFFERENCE AT NATIONAL ISSUES CONFERENCE

MCAA members and local execs came together in Washington, D.C. for the latest information on critical industry issues from policymakers and experts and then took their concerns about those issues to their House and Senate representatives. Pension reform took center stage as a key industry and legislative concern. The conference included a presentation by Bruce Perlin of the Multiemployer Program Division of the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation on why reform is needed and the various legislative options that are available. A panel discussion that included Randy DeFrehn of the National Coordinating Committee for Multiemployer Plans; Christopher Brockmeyer, Director of Employee Benefit Funds with the Broadway League; Rocky Miller of the Labor & Employee Benefits Group (Cox, Castle & Nicholson, LLP); and Gene Kalwarski, CEO & Principal Consulting Actuary of Cheiron led a lively discussion about pension reform options. Representatives Mary Kaptur (D-OH) and Gerry Connolly (D-VA) briefed members about tax issues and energy efficiency initiatives and issues before the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, respectively. Dr. Sarah Slaughter of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an expert on sustainable buildings discussed technologies under development for making buildings more energy-efficient. A panel of Congressional energy aides led a discussion about Energy Savings in the Built Environment which focused on legislative initiatives currently under consideration to encourage energy efficiency technology and design features in commercial buildings. Federal budget issues expert Stanley Collender of Quorvis Communications covered the latest developments in that policy area, and featured speaker Howard Fineman of the Huffington Post discussed the implications of the presidential campaign and other tight House and Senate races. Economist Anirban Basu concluded the conference with a thoughtful analysis of current economic developments and how they are affecting industry markets.
