MCAA's 48TH STUDENT CHAPTER FORMS AT UNIVERSITY OF BINGHAMTON, SUNY
The Mechanical Engineering Department of the University of Binghamton, State University of New York (Binghamton, N.Y.) is establishing MCAA's 48th student chapter. Sponsored by the Southern Tier of New York MCA, this will be the first MCAA student chapter in New York State. Dr. James Pitarresi, Distinguished Teaching Professor and Department Chairman, will serve as the chapter's faculty advisor. During a briefing last week, Dr. Pitarresi and Meredith Kumpon, executive director of the association, explained how the MCAA student chapter program works and the educational and career opportunities it offers to chapter members. Sixty-six students signed a list indicating their interest in joining the chapter. During the next few weeks, efforts will focus on plans for building the chapter and its program for the coming year, including chapter representation at the 2012 Student Chapter Summit in Kansas City, MO and at MCAA 2013 in San Antonio, TX. Want to know more about establishing an MCAA student chapter in your area? Contact Ann Mattheis (amattheis@mcaa.org). |
MCAA/PURESAFETY ONLINE SAFETY COURSES TEMPORARILY OFF-LINE
If your workers were planning to take the MCAA/PureSafety 10- and 30-hour Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) construction safety standards courses, be aware that access to those courses will be delayed for a short time. OSHA recently made substantive changes to its course requirements, and the agency is now verifying that its approved course providers have made the required changes. The courses are expected to be available again within the next few weeks, and MCAA will notify you when the service is back online. Please contact Pete Chaney (pchaney@mcaa.org) with questions. |

TAKE-HOME VALUE OF MCAA LEGISLATIVE CONFERENCE IS RISING
The value and importance of MCAA's Legislative/National Issues Conference (May 2-4, Washington, D.C.) is rising for attendees as the industry prepares for possible late gains in the lame duck session of the 112th Congress. Pension funding and legislative reform issues will be on center stage with four different and timely presentations on this very important topic. Josh Gotbaum, Director of the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC), will address the conference on the overall state of pension issues facing the PBGC, the federal back-stop for pension plans. Also, Bruce Perlin, Director of PBGC's Multiemployer Plan Division, will address specific issues in multiemployer plans. Phyllis Borzi, Department of Labor Assistant Secretary for the Employee Benefits Security Administration, will discuss new guidance pertaining to audits of apprenticeship funds and the department's position on pension and other issues. On the last day of the conference, Randy De Frehn, Director of the National Coordinating Committee for Multiemployer Plans (NCCMP), will discuss the progress of NCCMP's commission that is considering another round of legislative reforms to help pension plans weather the hard knocks suffered by unprecedented asset and market volatility over the past 10 years. And then, Gene Kalwarski, CEO and principal Consulting Actuary at Cheiron, will make a presentation on new developments relating to hybrid defined benefit pension plans. In addition, Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) will discuss labor/management issues pending in Congress, and Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) will address pending procurement issues pressed by MCAA and Quality Construction Alliance groups. Federal budget expert Stan Collender of Quorvis Communications will discuss federal budget issues, and Howard Fineman of the Huffington Post Media Group will discuss the political landscape heading into the general election. Don't miss this important conference for the sake of your company's future. Go to www.mcaa.org/education for program and registration details. |
