MCAA National Update for January 2, 2012
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
MCAA RECEIVES 27 ENTRIES FOR THE 2011-2012 STUDENT CHAPTER COMPETITION
Twenty-seven MCAA student chapters are competing this year in MCAA's Student Chapter Competition. In early October at the 2011 Student Chapter Summit in San Francisco, MCAA student chapters were invited to prepare and submit a proposal to retrofit an historic San Francisco building into the Asian Art Museum. And, for the first time, teams were required to prepare a bid for a service and maintenance package on the building after completion of the construction. The bids arrived on December 16, and were sent to a panel of judges drawn from MCAA's Career Development Committee. The judges will choose the top four best-scoring proposals at a meeting in early January 2012, and their teams will be invited to deliver a presentation on their submissions at MCAA 2012 at Walt Disney World® on March 19 at 1:30 p.m. The top prize is $5,000! Thanks to committee member John Powell of Marelich Mechanical Company (Hayward, CA) for arranging for our use of the project. For more information, contact Ann Mattheis (amattheis@mcaa.org).
NORTHERN CALIFORNIA MCA CONTRIBUTES $10,000 TO MCERF
The Mechanical Contracting Education & Research Foundation (MCERF) recently received a total of $10,000 in contributions from the Northern California Mechanical Contractors Association from two $5,000 payments, raising its total contributions to $316,000. The MCERF Board of Trustees is very grateful for the contributions which help support ongoing education and research programs that enable our industry to improve and advance. For more information about MCERF, please visit www.mcerf.org or contact Dennis Langley (dlangley@mcaa.org).
DON'T WAIT! SIGN UP NOW FOR AIPM COURSE 8

Our industry's top experts teach the course at a highly advanced level with an updated curriculum that includes team building, keeping customers for life, legal issues with difficult jobs, staying on top of schedule and productivity impacts, avoiding litigation, operational management, goal setting, and much more. Their professional network gets a boost too as they share their war stories with other top professionals from across the country as part of the learning experience. To ensure they gain the most benefit from the course, MCAA recommends that you send only graduates of the Institute for Project Management with some project management experience or advanced project managers with considerable experience. Please contact Beth Miller at bmiller@mcaa.org to register.

If you your safety director hasn't registered yet for the MCAA 2012 Safety Directors Conference (January 17-19 in New Orleans, LA), there's still time. This excellent educational program features the top experts on the latest OSHA regulations and issues; the hazards and consequences of distracted driving; key changes to the National Fire Protection Association's new 70E standard; introduction to a new Return on Investment Safety Calculator; and an update on jobsite safety and injury prevention issues. Go to www.mcaa.org/education to review the program and then register.

ARE YOUR SERVICE SUPERVISORS READY TO LEAD?

Make sure by sending them to MSCA's Growing and Developing Service Supervisors program (February 8-10, 2012, Ft. Lauderdale, FL)! This two-day intensive program provides management and leadership training to supervisors who come into their position with great technical skills and experience, but may be short on the skills needed to run a service operation effectively. The Growing and Developing Service Supervisors program addresses proven training methods in leadership, coaching, planning, time management, communication, motivational techniques and many more skills which will provide the attending service supervisor with the confidence to deal with today's workplace challenges and your company with the edge in today's tough, competitive market. For more information and to register, go to http://www.mcaa.org/education/msca/superservice/.
