The Week leading up to the Eighth Sunday after the Epiphany

Thought of the Week

This morning when I arrived at the church office I noticed that work had begun to take care of the trees in our graveyard.  There were two men up in the two chestnut trees next to the columbarium, as you can see in the Weekly Picture below, who were trimming away dead branches and pruning them for our trees' good health.  In case you didn't know, Ruth Clausen has set up a program for all the plants around our grounds to be taken care of.  We are trimming, fertilizing, and bedding the trees that beautify our church.  We are also removing the invasive species, vines, and poison ivy around our grounds.  Sometimes it is easy to let things like this go, but I believe that these practices are foundational for long term health.

March 9th is Ash Wednesday, a day that we gather to remember that we grow out of the soil of creation just as our trees and flowers do.  We will be reminded that we are dust and to dust we will return.  Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent, a season in which we are called to do the foundational work of pruning and fertilizing our relationships with God and each other.  We are also to work on getting rid of the invasive and poisonous things that choke out the healthiness of our spiritual lives.

I encourage you to enter into this Holy Lenten Season with your sights on your long term health, maybe even your eternal health, so that when we flower the cross on Easter Day it will reflect the blossoming of your heart.

See you in Church!

Fr. Josh
