National Women's Health Week

Celebrate National Women's Health Week: May 8-14, 2011

The 12th annual National Women's Health Week (NWHW) will kick off on Mother's Day, May 8, and will be celebrated until May 14, with the theme "It's Your Time." NWHW brings together communities, businesses, government, health organizations, and other groups in an effort to promote women's health. The weeklong health observance empowers women across the country to make their health a top priority and take simple steps for a longer, healthier and happier life.

Nurses and nurse practitioners are on the front lines of women's health, and have the opportunity to educate women every day on prevention and the screenings they need to stay healthy and prevent disease. There are several ways you can help celebrate National Women's Health Week, including: encouraging women in your community to visit their doctor or health care professional, holding a free screening or health event at your clinic, listing your activity on http://www.womenshealth.gov/whwand ordering free educational materials, disseminating women's health information or having a health display in your facilities. For more information or promotional materials, or to register your activities, please go to http://www.womenshealth.gov/whw or contact Maggie Naples at mnaples@hagersharp.com.

HRSA Nursing Scholarships

The Health Resources and Services Administration's (HRSA) Nursing Scholarship Program (NSP) application cycle is now open. The NSP awards scholarships to students enrolled or accepted for enrollment in accredited RN training programs.  Scholarship recipients receive tuition, fees, other educational costs and a living stipend in exchange for at least 2 years of post graduation service at a health care facility with a critical shortage of nurses.

Possible Phone Scam Targeting Nurses

Nurses in Missouri have reported calls from someone identifying themselves as being from the State Board.

The phone number displays as "Unknown Caller" with a number of 632-368-7550.

The reason given and information requested varies. Examples include: "We need to review some of the questions on your renewal form;" "We need to confirm your nursing specialty;" and "We need to confirm your work status."

No calls have been reported in Nevada, but if you should receive a call from someone stating they are from the State Board, you are encouraged to take the name, hang up, call the Board back on their toll free number, and request to speak to that person.
