NNA News You Can Use
The Voice of Nursing in Nevada
March, 2011

Greetings!

We are moving forward with our planned events for May. Please visit our website www.nvnurses.org for more information or to register for the Women's Health Conference. Some sites are filling up rapidly, so I hope you will consider registering soon.

I have included some sites with information about the disaster in Japan. I'm not aware that Japan is requesting medical or nursing personnel at this time.

The IFNN Awards Dinner/ Dance in Las Vegas is growing. NONL and NNEPA are now officially partnering with NNA on this event. Watch for more information.  If you are interested in sponsoring a table or placing an ad in the program, please contact Elizabeth Fildes at

NNA Women's Health Conference

Registration is going well for the May 10 NNA Women's Health Promotion conference. We now have 12 sites around the state, and we hope you can join us at one of them for this free CEU event, offered by NNA as a Nurses Week gift to nurses.

For more information or to register, please visit our website at www.nvnurses.org.

We have a limited budget for advertising this conference, and we need your help to let people know about it. Please help us to spread the word. We will also be sending out a flyer soon that you can print and post in your workplace. Thank you!

NIOSH Healthcare Personnel Survey

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) invites healthcare personnel to participate voluntarily in an online survey about health and safety practices in working with hazardous chemicals on the job. The survey is open until March 26, 2011.

The voluntary survey can be accessed at  www.niosh-healthcare-survey.org

You will be asked for an organization key which is: HCWS

Individual responses will be kept confidential, and no personal identifiers will be recorded. The survey will take about 30 minutes to complete.

Results of the survey will help NIOSH better understand the extent to which healthcare personnel may be exposed to chemical agents such as antineoplastic agents, anesthetic gases, surgical smoke, high level disinfectants, chemical sterilants, and aerosolized medications, and the circumstances of potential exposures. Results will also help NIOSH to better learn and understand current practices for reducing potential exposures, to identify gaps in current knowledge about those practices, and to design further research in collaboration with our partners for addressing those gaps.

Japan Earthquake/Tsunami

CDC has provided guidelines for clinicians with patients returning from the earthquake/tsunami region.

USAID is the lead federal agency in responding to international disasters. Visit their website for updates.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services stands ready to provide public health and medical support to the government of Japan, although none has been requested at this time.

ASPR, FDA, and CDC are coordinating with the Dept of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency, and West Coast states on public messaging to address concerns about any release of radiation from damaged nuclear power plants in Japan reaching the United States. Although no public health risks are expected in the U.S., Washington State and Oregon are monitoring air and water as a precaution.
