ANA House of Delegates Elects New ANA President
Karen Daley, PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN, was elected to a two-year term as American Nurses Association (ANA) President by nurse representatives at the ANA House of Delegates HOD). Daley is a past president of the Massachusetts Association of Registered Nurses (MARN) and the Massachusetts Center for Nursing. She served as a member of ANA's Board of Directors (2008-2010) and as a director of the American Nurses Credentialing Center. "We have exciting and challenging work ahead," said Daley. "As an association and profession, we must draw on the strength of our values - for the challenges that we face may have changed, but the things that we believe in do not."

Daley holds a diploma in nursing from Catherine Laboure School of Nursing, a bachelor's of science in nursing from Curry College, a master's of public health from Boston University School of Public Health, and a master's in science from Boston College. In addition, she earned a doctoral degree from Boston College.
President Daley spent her nursing career as a front-line caregiver and staff nurse at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston where she began her career in 1973; she served as a senior staff nurse in Brigham and Women's emergency department until January 1999. Since that time, while continuing her role as a state association president, she became actively engaged as an advocate for legislation to mandate use of safer needle devices in health care practice settings.

She has been recognized with numerous awards for her outstanding leadership and excellence in practice. In 2006, Daley was recognized as a living nursing legend by the Massachusetts Association of Registered Nurses, and was inducted as a fellow into the American Academy of Nursing in recognition of the national and international impact of her needlestick injury prevention advocacy.

The Huntridge Teen Clinic in Las Vegas needs volunteer APNs. The Clinic provides free or nominal-cost medical and dental care to disadvantaged and at-risk teens in the Las Vegas area.  The kids are from families with meager financial resources, no insurance and few options.  Some are homeless.  The Huntridge Teen Clinic represents, in most cases, their only hope for the basic medical care and counseling most people take for granted.

Medical clinic patients are predominantly female.  Treatment provided includes treatment of minor illnesses and STDs, health care counseling and education, family planning counseling, and lab tests.

The NPs have historically been paid staff members but the Clinic is no longer able to incur the payroll expense due to reduced funding levels.  They do not accept insurance of any kind, relying instead on grants and donations from area corporations and foundations.  Those sources of financial support have diminished over the last couple of years.

The Clinic is trying to develop a program for recruiting volunteer nurse practitioners.  They have one volunteer NP on board now but she can work only one half-day per week.

If you can help, please call Steve Williams, Executive Director of the Huntridge Teen Clinic at (702) 732-8776.

Please let me know if you have comments, suggestions, or information you want included in the next News You Can Use.

Sincerely,

Margaret
