Over the past few months I have shared with you the many exciting things we are working on at WCFR - things that will directly improve the lives of women and children in need in our community.  Programs like Nutrition to Go and the Guest Chef dinners mean that women and children who would otherwise go hungry, have a well-balanced meal.  Of course, moving into our own facility is still something that we hope to do in the next couple of years.

Community support is vital to carrying out our mission.  We create community in many ways - including our fall fundraiser, A Little Night Music.  This year we have set ourselves a big goal - $100 Grand!  Reaching this goal will help fill the plates of women and children in need in our community.

A Little Night Music will be on September 30 from 6 - 10 PM at The Lincoln Center.  We'll have silent and live auctions, small plates from some of Spokane's best chefs (including WCFR's own Chef Karen) and dancing to the Sammy Eubanks Band.

We have many exciting developments for the night, but let's start with Pawn 1.  They have agreed to be our Matching Sponsor for the evening!  They will match donations made during the "Raise the Paddle" up to a specific cap.  So if you write a check for $100, the Restaurant gets $200!

We want to thank the additional sponsors who have signed on, including:

Spokane Teacher's Credit Union

Bank of America

Food Services of America

Numerica Credit Union

Washington Trust Bank

Kalispel Tribes and Northern Quest Resort and Casino

These companies are a big part of what makes our community great!  We hope that you will keep them in mind as you do business in the community.

Check out the sidebar for some of the fabulous auction items that you will be able to bid on.

See you on September 30!

Tony's Story
WCFR recently said good bye to a long-time friend, a young man by the name of Tony, who was a friend of the Restaurant for more than 10 years.

Tony first came to the Restaurant as a young boy of 7 or 8 years old.  He came as a guest, with his mother and sister.  He remembers loving the chicken enchiladas.  Tony's family came to the Restaurant at least once a week on and off for several years. WCFR was an important source of food for his family during the times his mom didn't have a job.

In the fifth grade, Tony set his sights on going to college.  He knew education would be the way to a more stable life.  Unfortunately, before he could get there, tragedy would befall with the passing of his mother, just as Tony was entering high school.  He went to live with his father at that time.

It was not a good situation there.  Eventually, Tony moved out and began living on his own while still in high school.  But he still dreamed of college.

He recognized that to have a competitive college application, he needed some extra-curricular activities.   Volunteer work seemed like a pretty good idea, so he decided to volunteer with WCFR because in his words, "they were the ones that helped my family."

Tony washed dishes once a week for a couple of years.  He did this as a high school student, without encouragement from his father, and without his own transportation.  He would take the bus to and from the Restaurant in order to wash dishes!

Tony will start school at the University of Washington later this summer and major in engineering.  WCFR wishes him well and thanks him for his dedication to helping.  We are proud to have been a part of his life.
Thank you Numerica Credit Union
Numerica DonationJuly 12 was a great day for Spokane and WCFR.  One that day, Numerica Credit Union visited 5 non-profit organizations and delivered donations.

We were so pleased to meet President and CEO Dennis Cutter and his team, including Jane Ronnfeldt, Brittanie Young, and Kelli Hawkins.  The $5000 check that they left was a huge surprise!  It is not every day that $5000 walks in our doors - especially without asking for it.

The money will be put to good use!  This unexpected gift means that we can more freely order nutrition-rich foods for women and children.  We can add extra protein and extra produce to their plates.

THANK YOU Numerica!

Summer BBQ is Just a Month Away!
2010 Summer BBQ
Although we delayed our Summer BBQ for a couple of months, we are looking forward to greeting 700+ guests in our parking lot on August 23, from 3 - 6 PM.  We have ordered up tents, chairs and hundreds of hamburgers and hot dogs, along with all of the fixings.

We are excited to welcome the Sammy Eubanks Band back and we'll have crafts for the kids too.

Because the BBQ takes place so close to the start of school, we would like to make sure that every child has a reason to be excited to go back to school.  Wouldn't a new backpack go a long way to ensuring that?  Can you donate a new backpack or two?  The community is pretty generous in collecting all of the other school supplies, but backpacks are always in short supply.

Thank you to our sponsors of this event - American West Bank, the Community Building Foundation, Western States Insurance and First Book.  We appreciate their commitment to making Spokane a better community for everyone!

Thank you for your support.  Your donations mean that women and children can have a complete meal!  Donate on-line, by following this link.

Sincerely,
