Greetings!
Marlene
Thank goodness we are finally experiencing some spring in Spokane!  The blue sky and warm sun are certainly welcome!

I have nothing but admiration for the women who dine here.    So many of them are alone and without a support system.  They live on fixed incomes and haven't had a cost of living increase in more than 2 years!  The cost of fruits and vegetables is up 23%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.  Overall, food costs have risen 5%.  Heating costs have risen too!  When your income is just over $600 a month those kind of increases are tough to absorb.

Thank you for your continued support that allows us to welcome these women and children with a hot meal.  Our many loyal donors and volunteers are vital in this effort.  Please continue to provide support so that these women and children can eat.

Finally, I would like to share something with you that really warmed my heart.  If you read The Inlander, you may know about the "Cheers and Jeers"  section.  In this week's issue, appeared the following Cheers under the headline You Are Family:

Cheers to the Women's & Children's Free Restaurant.  This restaurant, with all its people has given me health, dignity, respect & a warm feeling that I matter.  They are more than just dinner to me, they are family.

We don't know who submitted this item, but we are so glad that we have been able to touch this woman in such a way.  Everyday, we strive to deliver the very things she talks about - health, dignity, and respect.  We are so glad that she, and you, are a part of our family.

Creativity and Generosity Overflowed at 5th Annual Spring Tea

2011 TeaNearly 350 women gathered on May 7th for WCFR's 5th Annual Spring Tea.  Table captains went all out decorating their tables - some with heirloom China, others with whimsical dragonflies and butterflies and other tables conjured up spring themes.  Hats off to Board Member Terry Decker for her beautiful vegetable-themed centerpiece, which saluted WCFR's commitment to nutrition with a beautiful cauliflower right in the center.

Guests also had the opportunity to bid on beautiful cakes and flower arrangements in teapots.  Vendors from the community also provided an opportunity for shopping.

The exciting news is that our guests at the tea helped us reach our maximum for the matching donation by Northwest Beauty.  Northwest Beauty promised to match all donations made at the tea, up to $5000.  Our guests surpassed that number by more than double!

Many people helped make this one of our most successful events ever!  We have listed them in the column above on the left-hand side.  Thank you to everyone who participated.  And a special thank you to event chairs, Molly Wendle and Judy Looper.

Board of Directors welcomes Sherry Harbaugh
Sherry Harbaugh recently joined the WCFR Board of Directors.  A native of Montana, Sherry has a Masters in Architecture from Montana State University and has her own architectural consulting business in Spokane, where she has lived for the past 16 years.  She is the mother of 2 teenage girls as well.

Sherry first came to the Restaurant when she was the Religious Education Coordinator for Sacred Heart Parish.  She introduced the kids to WCFR, along with several other nonprofits, relationships that have continued to this day.

Sherry has a special heart for women's and children's organizations.  She says that she is "excited to be a part of WCFR at such an exciting time in their development and outreach and is learning even more about the needs in our community."

We are excited to welcome Sherry to our Board and to our volunteer ranks as well.  She is a regular server, along with her daughters on our Guest Chef nights.  We know her skills will be valuable in guiding WCFR to our future.

Date Set for Summer BBQ

Our Summer BBQ will take place on August 23 this year and will incorporate a back-to-school party for the kids!  Sammy Eubanks and his band will be here and we are pleased to announce that American West Bank is sponsoring the event.  Many of their employees have volunteered in the past and it is so nice that they have adopted this event as one of the community events that they support.

If you would like to volunteer, either as a member of the organizing committee, in the lead-up to the 23rd, or as a volunteer on the 23rd, please contact Karen Orlando at volunteer@wcfrspokane.org or 324-1995, ext. 300.

As always, your donations are appreciated.  They truly do make a difference in the lives of women and children in our community.  Please give.
