Donations are in the Jeans...

Thank you to Witherspoon Kelley and Moss Adams and their employees for gifting WCFR with the results of their jeans day!

Paying to wear jeans is a creative way to give back to the community and we are grateful that our work was recognized this way.

Guest Chef Series - It's a Hit!

We've had two of our guest chef dinners and both have been a huge success.  Thank you to our own Chef Karen and Chef Romeo Herrera of Catered for You for creating these special dinners.

We know our guests were grateful to have an additional dinner, and enjoyed the healthy foods.

Our next dinner will be on April 11, from 4 - 6 pm.  Chef Michael Lindsey, Banquet and Sous Chef at Northern Quest Casino will step up to the stove.  He'll be preparing bison!  Join us if you want to learn about some healthy alternatives in your diet.

Greetings!
Marlene

More than 23 years ago, who knew that the meal program, known in the community as Women's & Children's Free Restaurant, would remain in the basement of St. Paul's Church all this time!

We have been so grateful to the congregation for their love and care of our program.  They have allowed us to create a space that has been inviting and comforting to women and children in need.  As the number of women and children who needed food grew, so did our operation.  We continued to sprawl out through the entire basement and even took over some storage on the 3rd floor!

For more than one year now, the congregation has been working with the United Methodist leadership and WCFR on a future for the building.  The congregation has grown small, and can no longer support the building.  As of the first of March, the church building has been put on the market for sale.

The staff and Board of Directors of WCFR have decided to use this opportunity to explore finding a new home.  There have been a number of challenges to our current location, but the generosity of the congregation always out-weighed those challenges.  Being located in the basement has created some strong muscles on those staff and volunteers who have hauled down 325,000+ pounds of food.  Our storage of food has been spread out, sometimes causing inventory headaches.  Guests, volunteers and staff miss being able to look out the window and connect with the world outside.

We remain very committed to staying in the West Central Neighborhood.  This has been our home for more than 23 years and many of our guests live in this neighborhood.  We are an important part of their well-being.

A team is currently examining other West Central locations.  We will begin a capital campaign sometime this year, in order to raise funds to buy a building.  There are grant programs and other large gifts that are available to non-profits who are seeking a permanent home.  Owning our own building is the best way to guarantee that WCFR will continue to be a community safety-net.

We will certainly need your support.  Of course, we need your donations to maintain our current programs - they are our highest priority.  We will also need your donations to help us buy a new building.  I ask that you give some thought to making a plan so that you can continue your current support, but also add support of a capital campaign to your giving.  The legacy created by contributing to our permanent home will impact many generations.  You can make a donation right now if you like, just by clicking here.

With your help, there won't be any gaps in service to our women and children.    This is a very exciting time for us - finding a new, permanent home from which to efficiently provide meals to women and children in need.  Stay tuned to our newsletter - we'll keep you updated on our plans and also publicize our needs here.  Thank you again for your support of WCFR.

Spring Has Sprung on the Tea!
Tea Table
WCFR's 5th Annual Spring Tea is off to a fantastic start!  More than 30 women have said they want to be a table captain.  And, we are so pleased to announce that Northwest Beauty has agreed to be our matching sponsor!  This means they will match donations made on the day of the tea.
The tea will be held on May 7, beginning at 11:30, at The Lincoln Center.  If you would like to attend, or be a table captain, or volunteer, please contact Karen Orlando at volunteer@wcfrspokane.org, or by phone at 324-1994, extention 301.
Sheila McCrea - We couldn't have done it without you!

Every

Randy and Sheila.
volunteer contribution is important and plays a role in the work of WCFR.  Today, we would like to honor Sheila McCrae, one of our longest-serving volunteers.

For 17+ years, Sheila has volunteered every Tuesday evening to supervise our Tuesday dinner service, and evening closing procedures at the restaurant.  Many nights Sheila & Marlene mopped the floors together before leaving for the night.
Sheila has been involved in every community dinner and special event fundraiser for the past 10 years. Her dedication to our mission has gone above and beyond.

Volunteers like Sheila have helped WCFR grow, yet remain close to our roots.  Her steady presence lifted a big burden off the staff, knowing they could leave on Tuesdays, with the Restaurant, and our guests, in Sheila's hands.  Sheila is stepping down as a WCFR volunteer - temporarily we hope!  Sheila, you are truly one of the people that has made WCFR a great place - we wish you well and hope you will stay in touch!  Thank you to her husband Randy who continues as our Saturday Supervisor.
An Experience that Impacted a Life

Several years ago, WCFR was the chosen project of the Knights & Setons Club at Gonzaga University.  Members of the club volunteered at the Restaurant and raise funds to support our mission.  We recently heard from one of those students and her words speak for themself:

Marlene,

You may not remember me (in fact I would be shocked if you did), (actually, Marlene did remember her!) but I wanted to write you a message and congratulate you on the success of the Free Restaurant.  I was the Treasurer for the Gonzaga Setons group in 2004-2005.  That year we all volunteered and donated our raised funds, but I was able to still volunteer again my senior year.  I just loved your mission and I loved volunteering with you.

Right now I am working for the Washington Health Foundation in the Grant department.  We only give out grants to Rural Communities around Washington and this year we are not awarding any.   But, we do try to keep tabs on other Foundations around the state for our grant recipients.  I was checking out the new grants awarded by the Empire Health Foundation and saw you!

I wanted to congratulate you on being awarded one of their first grants-I am assuming by your website you all are still thriving.  I also wanted to thank you for providing such a wonderful environment for me while I volunteered with your group.  While at Gonzaga, I majored in Business, but this fall I will be starting my masters in Nutrition-end goal: Registered Dietician.  Sounds funny, but I actually wrote about the Free Restaurant in one of my grad school applications.  I loved how your meals provided more than just nutrition, they provided a sense of community and acceptance.

Hope you are well!  Take care.

Kristina A.

Kristina, thank you for your service to WCFR - and your commitment to nutrition!  We are so glad that your time with us was such a good experience for you.  You helped us create that place of community and acceptance.  Best wishes in all you do!

Your support - time and donations - have created a wonderful community for women and children in Spokane.  Please continue.  You can follow this link and make an on-line donation, or even set-up a recurring donation!

Sincerely,
