Ask Gigi!

GigiI have noticed that with Spring and all the rain, I am seeing a lot more wildflower, weeds, bees and even the landscaping bushes are blooming like crazy.  Are they beautiful? Yes!  Are any of the weeds harmful to pets?  Yes!  I should mention how fun the bees are for me to try and catch! But those stings hurt like crazy!

Although I seem to be an expert on just about everything, I decided to ask Dr. Gniadek, who thinks he knows more than me, what I need to know about Foxtails, a nasty little weed that gets in the paws and other places on a pets body, bee stings and Easter Lilies.  In this newsletter, he answered my questions and I am sharing the answers with you.

I couldn't believe that not one of you asked me a question last month!  I am trying to earn a living as the residence "Spokes Cat".  They are going to cut off my wet food if I don't earn my keep!  Think about it and tell Melanie, who is acting as my secretary, what subject you would like me to address, and I will get right to it!

WHAT IS IN YOUR PET FOOD?

What is in your dog food? Are you looking at the picture and wondering what in the world is really in this picture?

This picture actually represents one of the most bizarre things that we have ever had happen in the 8 years we have owned this business!

On 3/26/10, a client presented their 11 month old boxer for boarding.  She asked that we feed her food and gave us a small bag of puppy food.

Once the kennel staff had the pet settled in, the kennel attendant tried to open the new bag of food, and ended up cutting the bag.  It was then that she discovered, a dog food bag filled with cereal and dried pinto beans!  Knowing this client and her dog, the kennel attendant couldn't believe what she was seeing.  She stuck her hand in the bag and pulled out a new, unopened jar of peanut butter!  Not knowing what to do with this odd assortment of ingredients, she came up to the front to check the contract.  The contract said to free feed the dog, but made no mention about the strange ingredients.  Upon further investigation of the bag, we found a bag of Mini Mexican Alphabet macaroni's!

At this point we called the owner and asked what we were supposed to do with the ingredients in the bag, since our Veterinarian said none of them were appropriate for a dog's meal.  She wanted to know what the heck we were talking about, and we explained what we had found in the bag.  Her immediate reaction was "That is not my bag of dog food!  I bought a small bag yesterday at (one of the large pet supply stores) so it would be easy to bring to you."  We then questioned rather or not she had written her last name on the bag and she said yes.  This was definitely the bag of food she had dropped off!

We assured her that we would feed her dog Royal Canin maintenance, which is what we feed all the dogs in the kennel.

How did this happen?  We have an idea although we have no positive proof.  We think someone purchased the food, took it home, saved the food for their pet, replaced the food with the cereal, macaroni, dried beans and peanut butter.  Why?  We believe because they were on food stamps and pet food is not covered.  Everything they replaced the real food with could be purchased with food stamps.  They returned the sealed bag for a full cash refund.

Arizona Pet Resort only sells one brand of pet food, Royal Canin, and for a good reason.  We believe it is the best diet on the market.  They have heavy controls in the manufacturing factory.  They have never had a recall.  They don't put a lot of corn in their foods.  Royal Canin LogoThey preserve naturally, with ingredients like rosemary extract.

Arizona Pet Resort will accept a returned bag of food, even if it has been opened and partially consumed.  But even if it appears that it hasn't been open, we will never put that bag on the shelf and resell it.

Take advantage of this month's coupon and try some Royal Canin Veterinary Prescribed Food today!  Your pet will love you for it!

SPRING CAN BE HARMFUL
 TO YOUR PETS!

Article by Dr. Raymond Gniadek, Veterinarian

Wildflowers carpet Arizona Arizona Wild Flowersroadsides and washes in the early Spring.  This beauty is also a harbor of many hazards to your pet.  Accompanying these floral displays are many of nature's pollinators, the bees and their relatives.  Pets, while enjoying the many new scents of Spring, often place their paw or their muzzle in harms way resulting in a bad sting.

Bee stings can be harmless, but in some pets showing hypersensitivity, they can be life threatening.  Any swelling of the face, lips or paws after a bee sting should be brought to your Veterinarian's attention immediately.  Sometimes first aid can be given over the phone, but often an injection or two is needed to reverse the swelling and combat the allergic reaction, which can sometimes be fatal.

Green grass is a wonderful place for you pet to romp and play, unless the greenery contains foxtail grass.  Foxtail grass can be found all over Arizona, but tends to grow in the Spring after heavy Winter rains.  It quickly goes to seed and produces a wheat-like head containing seeds which easily bread off and work their way into the ears, eyes, feet, mouth, tail, vagina orFoxtailpenile sheath. Due to a sharp, corkscrew-like tip, they go deeper and deeper the more that your pet scratches or licks at them. Not only are they painful for your pet, but they quickly become a major health threat, producing deep infections.

It is best to keep your pet(s) out of overgrown areas where foxtails can be found.   Don't let your lawn become overgrown as foxtails can pop up in ordinary lawns.  As the summer progresses and things really heat up, the threat of foxtails diminishes.  by monsoon season most foxtails are gone until the following Spring.

You should be on the lookout for excessive shaking of the head, scratching at the ears or eyes, painful feet or sudden lameness.  Should any of these symptoms occur, please call Arizona Pet Resort for a complete exam.  Should the foxtails be found, anesthesia may be needed for painless removal.  Antibiotics or other treatment may also be needed.

Easter LilyThis is the Easter season and if  you received an Easter Lily as a gift, or bought one to celebrate the
holiday, please know that it is very toxic to our feline friends.  Cats are extremely sensitive to a toxin in members of the lily family, especially Easter lilies.  One or two leaves is all it takes for often permanent damage to the liver and kidneys.  Don't take the chance.  If you have one in your home, remove it immediatelyYou could recycle it by giving it to a friend or neighbor or donate it to a senior citizen's center.
April Pet of the Month

We welcome Lucas as the Pet of the Month.  Lucas is a regular DoggieLucas Day Camper who loves to hang out with his Arizona Pet Resort friends.

Lucas shares his home with his dad, Jonathan, who is an Electrical Engineer.

Together, they like to hike in Colorado every chance they get. Lucas loves the snow!   Four Peaks, here in Arizona is another favorite hiking area for Lucas and Jonathan.

When at home, Lucas loves a special rope toy but any toy will do, as long as he is playing.  He also loves to chase pebbles in the water.

It is easy to figure out if Lucas is relaxing or sleeping.  His relaxed mode includes crossing his front paws.  His sleep mode involves sleeping on his back with his paws in the air.

We think Lucas is deserving of the title of Pet of the Month, which is a title he can add to his other title of "Mr. Cool".
