Featured Preacher:
Sam Hill

Sam Hill

This issue's Featured Preacher is Sam Hill, a graduate of William Jewell College. Sam is a member of the Baptist church and his mentor is his father, Drew Hill of Sedalia, Mo. Sam was one of 126 Young Preachers who participated in the 2011 National.

"I truly found the Festival to be such a unique idea. I have considered myself a Young Preacher since early in high school, and never before have I had the opportunity to share my thoughts and feelings with a fellow Young Preachers grappling with the same challenges," said Sam.

Sam felt that the Festival was not only a time for learning but also a time for encouragement.

"The Festival has clarified my calling, jump-started my enthusiasm, and demonstrated the power of the prophetic voice, "Sam said. "My pursuit of the preaching vocation has experienced a breath of fresh air. I have a greater peace as I enter into adulthood that my passion for preaching is a part of what makes me, me; it is with an attitude of humble optimism that I move forward to seek and reflect Christ in the world."

 Greetings!

Welcome to the post-National Festival installment of the iPreach Newsletter, bringing you the latest news from the Academy of Preachers.

National Festival Resounding Success

Neither snow nor sickness nor ministerial duties kept 126 Young Preachers from converging in Louisville, Kentucky for their assigned duty on January 6-8: preaching!  With them came mentors, conveners, evaluators, exhibitors and volunteers, plus people right off the street.

When the Festival was over, 130 sermons had been preached over a three-day period!

Make your plans now to register for the 2012 National Festival, to be held once again in Louisville on January 3-5. Registration information will soon be posted to the Academy of Preachers website.

A Word from Dr. Moody
Dwight A. Moody, Executive Director

The second National Festival of Young Preachers confirmed the findings of the inaugural Festival: Young Preachers are hungry for fellowship and encouragement; peer inspiration is the transformational element of the Festival; Young Preachers are open to each other across ecclesiastical and theological boundaries; this Festival is unique in the Christian community in America; the future of preaching is more hopeful than we thought!

And when we gather in Louisville next year for the 2012 National Festival of Young Preachers, there will be more Young Preachers, more exhibitors, and more people gathering just to witness this amazing phenomenon. There may also be more congregational and denominational representatives there to recruit these outstanding Young Preachers.

In the meantime, much will happen. We will endorse and assist as many as a dozen Campus Festivals, beginning with Truett Seminary and Trevecca Nazarene University, both in the first week of March. We will host at least four preaching camps, in Texas, Tennessee, New York, and Georgia. We will exhibit and present our work at ministerial gatherings in such places as Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, South Carolina, and Virginia. We will publish another book of sermons, raise another $150,000, and make another report to the Lilly Endowment.

We are also exploring the feasibility of launching a weekly broadcast, first on the World Wide Web and then also on cable television. The program would feature the Young Preachers and their sermons from the 2011 National Festival of Young Preachers. We will also promote our Founding and National Partners; and we will advertise both our products available for sale (apparel, DVDs, books, etc.) and our programs available to Young Preachers (camps and Festivals). To embrace this expansion of our ministry we will need a donor to provide at least $20,000.

Nothing can adequately convey the energy and impact of the National Festivals. For we who have been preaching for decades it is a heart-warming, Christ-affirming, gospel-lifting delight.  For many young people it is a soul-satisfying, vocation-confirming, spirit-anointing awakening. For the Church of the Living God, it is good news!

Thoughts on the Festival

"Thanks for an amazing Festival - better even than last."

"Thank you so much for this incredible and spirit-filled opportunity. Coming from a seminary with only others from my denomination, this was so helpful and enriching! It helps dispel myths and stereotypes about others and focus on our unity in being the body of Christ and preaching the Word."

"This Festival helped me appreciate the diversity of preaching styles and interpretations. Thank you for this generous gift you have given to us, this unique opportunity for fellowship and growth."

"I really appreciate the open-mindedness of everyone that attended and I am thankful for all the positive, uplifting, and challenging messages I heard. Thank you!"

"I would really like to see more reflection and formal discussion among young preachers. There is a lot going on and it would be great to process more - there's so much to learn from discussing with others."

"No word to describe this experience! Awesome!!!"

"The Academy of Preachers is a national, ecumenical initiative launched through a generous grant from the Lilly Endowment of Indianapolis and enlarged through the gifts of individuals and organizations. The Academy is energized by the conviction that gospel preaching is a vocation of public and social significance, a calling worthy of the very best and brightest of our young people."
