Greetings!
Welcome to the July 2010
edition of the iPreach Newsletter. We're pleased to bring you the latest news
from the Academy
of Preachers.
The weekend of July 24-25, eight
young preachers helped us introduce the Academy of Preachers
to our new institutional home at Middletown Christian Church.
Krista Phillips came over from Indiana, Brandon Perkins and Winterbourne
Jones came up from Tennessee, and the four of
them joined with four preachers from Louisville-area churches: Adam Kilchenman, Katie Beachie, Andre Morton and Alex Williams.
The
presentation to the church included live interviews, printed materials,
exhibits, and various kinds of visuals.
Middletown Christian is now the official headquarters of the Academy's new office. In a few weeks, we will actually have
furniture in our office!
We are excited about our partnership with Middletown Christian and invite you all to stop by our new offices and visit any time.

2010 Fundraising Campaign Update
The
first phase of our first campaign was a smashing success! We have raised more than $68,000.
Our two year goal to raise $220,000 was launched in April with a three-month
effort to raise $50,000. The money is used to fund three programs: the
Young Preachers Leadership Team, the National Festival of Young Preachers, and
the Preaching Camp.
Two events were held, one in Owensboro and the
second in Louisville.
These, plus personal and individual appeals, secured gifts totaling more than
$68,000. This is encouraging to all of us.
Events are now being planned for Hopkinsville, Lexington, and Louisville
(again). More information to come.
Thank you for your support. Thank you for your encouragement.

A Word from Dr. Moody
The
late Michael Spencer has written a frank and disturbing critique of the
American church. His basic thesis is the church, especially the evangelical
church, has failed t o deliver on its promises and is in danger of dissolving
over the next two decades. When he first wrote this sobering judgment through his blog, the Internet Monk,
last year, he received national and international reaction. This book, Mere
Churchianity, is the result. Unfortunately, Michael died in April of 2010, a mere four months after a cancer
diagnosis. But his ideas live on, and they pose a serious challenge to young
preachers.
"I don't care if I ever hear another sermon," one middle-age person,
a Christian, said to Michael, as reported in the book. Many people share this
disinterest in preaching, largely because the sermon often says little and says
it in a dull and trivial way.
Preaching can rescue the church from obsolescence and self-obsession. Preaching
can take the church where it needs to be: following Jesus, declaring gospel,
serving the world, resisting all empires but the rule of God.
If preaching is good, intelligent, passionate, and full of a moral vision of
human life on earth, it will function as a transformational power in
congregations, communities, nations, and the world. It is one vehicle by which
God is making a difference in the world today. It is one way in which Jesus
Christ is present among the people.
This gospel preaching is the calling that many young preachers have embraced.
We at the Academy
of Preachers are
gathering support from all quarters to inspire and encourage these young
preachers. It has the potential to change the course of the American Christian
community.
- Dwight Moody, President

"The Academy of Preachers is a national, ecumenical initiative
launched through a generous grant from the Lilly Endowment of Indianapolis and enlarged through the gifts
of individuals and organizations. The Academy is energized by the conviction
that gospel preaching is a vocation of public and social significance, a
calling worthy of the very best and brightest of our young people."
