Dear POA members,
The Republican Newspaper has published an editorial which is not factually based and is critical of lake residents who are concerned about the low water level that occurs in the fall months. An organized response was initiated by the white water association and the trout fishermen association.
There are serious problems with the "facts" and conclusions of the editorial. The subsequent letters to the editor build upon these errors with further exaggerations. Most of the letters come from out of state non-property owners of the lake watershed. The Policy and Review Board (PRB) of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) did submit a letter to the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) requesting a review of the lake water level rule bands but did not include the conclusions attributed to it by the editorial. The POA representative, Barry Weinberg, has been constructively working with the PRB as to the best response to the situation.
The POA board has recently submitted a press release to the Republican Newspaper on the good things that the POA is doing for the lake well being and the benefits to the residents of Garrett county - the release does not address the editorial directly. The POA is developing a constructive and factual response to Don Sincell, editor of the republican newspaper and will be executed in a timely manner.
The POA has worked hard to remove the negative opinion of some people towards those who live in the lake watershed, and has seen considerable success in this quest. The above referenced editorial does not contribute to this effort.
The PRB will address the issue at its quarterly meeting on October 24 at 6:00 pm. The meeting is to be held at the State Park Discovery Center in the downstairs meeting room. Your attendance at this important meeting is encouraged. It is expected that representatives from Friendsville and the MDE will attend as well as those from the DNR.
Troy Ellington, President, POA of DCL, Inc.
