News You Can Use

The Wall Street Journal.  A thought provoking article titled How to Stop Hospitals From Killing Us was in the WSJ this week.  It highlighted the statistic that 98,000 patients die each year due to medical errors - enough to fill 4 jumbo planes each week. The article lists 5 ways to start lowering that number.  (Makary, 9/21)   Full story

USA Today.  After a newspaper reported that the Chandler Regional Medical Center billed a patient over $39,000 for anti-venom medication following a scorpion sting, the hospital has lowered the cost to $8,000.  The price of the medication in Mexico is $100, and the article created public concern regarding overpriced drugs in the US.  (Alltucker, 9/27)   Full story

Industry News
USA TodayPublic health and law enforcement efforts to curb abuse of prescription drugs appear to be working.  According to the article "In 2011, 6.1 million people abused narcotic pain pills, tranquilizers, stimulants and sedatives, down from 7 million people in 2010..." Additionally, alcohol and tobacco use among youth continues to decline. (Leger, 9/25)  Full Story

FiercePharma.  Is a $0.05 pill the answer to curing cancer?  Studies show that the Type II Diabetes drug metformin makes patients less likely to develop some forms of cancer.  The fact that it's cheap and is off patent may actually be hindering research, however, as the low profit margin means drug companies are less interested in researching the drug.  (Palmer, 9/26)  Full Story

Health Policy Matters
NBC. 13 public high schools in New York City now offer free birth control and emergency contraceptive pills to students.  90% of the 7,000 pregnancies to girls between 15-17 in New York City are unintentional, and the city's health department is trying to increase easy access to reproductive health services.  Parents can opt their student out of the program, and 1-2% of parents have chosen to do so.(Flam, 9/25) Full Story

Kaiser Health NewsThe AARP endorsed the Health Law in 2010 because "it extends the solvency of Medicare by eight years until 2024 and gives seniors free preventive care and closes the "doughnut hole" in the Medicare prescription drug program."  Both President Obama and GOP VP nominee Paul Ryan spoke at the AARP convention in New Orleans last week.  Click into the article for excerpts.
