News You Can Use

US News.  New research demonstrates that the anticancer drug Herceptin may increase a woman's risk of heart failure and cardiomyopathy.  While it was already known that the drug may result in long-term cardiac problems, this study shows that the risk is higher than previously thought.  (8/30)   Full story    

 

The Daily Mail.  In lighter news, this author has pulled together drug advertisements from the late eighteen hundreds.  With drawings of young children and promising cures for ailments, the ingredients in the drugs range from cocaine to alcohol and morphine.  The old time advertisements are a great reminder of the benefit of the FDA and pharmaceutical marketing regulations.  (McQueeney, 9/4)  Full story  

 

Industry News
The New York TimesThe FDA has approved Xtandi, created by Medivation, as a life-prolonging drug for people with late stage prostate cancer.  In trials, men taking the drug lived an average of 5 months longer than men taking a placebo.  (Pollack, 8/31)  Full Story

Fox News.  Bosulif, a drug from Pfizer, was also recently approved by the FDA.  Bosulif was designed to treat chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).  The drug was given orphan status because the disease affects fewer than 200,000 people in the US.  (9/5)  Full Story
