August is National Breastfeeding Month
From the United States Breastfeeding Committee (USBC): The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding (released January 2011) has brought unprecedented attention and renewed energy to efforts to support mothers to reach their personal breastfeeding goals. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin has called on the entire nation to take 20 concrete action steps to support the removal of barriers to breastfeeding. The "20 Actions in 20 Days" campaign will highlight these action steps and implementation strategies for six major sectors of society:
- Mothers and their Families
- Communities
- Health Care
- Employment
- Research and Surveillance
- Public Health Infrastructure

ABC News. A skin cancer drug, bexarotene, has shown to reduce Alzheimer's symptoms in mice, and now some doctors are prescribing it off-label for Alzheimer's patients. This article examines the study, and discusses why that might not be an ethical step for physicians to take. (Garge, 8/9) Full story

Health Canal. Diabetics taking thiazolidinedione drugs have been found to be 2-3 times more likely to develop bladder cancer than diabetics on other medications. This brings their risk up to 170 out of 100,000. Approximately 20% of diabetics are currently taking these drugs. (8/13) Full story

HealthDay. Thanks to vaccinations, cases of the chicken pox have dropped 80% in 31 states over the past decade. The vaccine is normally taken in 2 spaced-out doses. (Steele, 8/16) Full Story

HealthDay. Is hormone-free male birth control almost here? A recent study on mice and rats demonstrated that it could be. The prototype drug, JQ1, didn't affect sexual activity, but it did reduce sperm cell production and the surviving sperm didn't work as well. When the mice and rats went off the drug, they were again able to reproduce. (Esposito, 8/16) Full Story

Fox News. Diseases that are growing resistant to treatments have been in the news lately, and the most recent disease to be highlighted is gonorrhea. Gonorrhea is now resistant to all drugs minus one - including penicillin, tetracycline and fluoroquinolones. While still responding to ceftriaxone, health officials are stating that it too will soon become resistant and a new drug is needed. (Dearment, 8/10) Full Story
