From the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: August is typically recognized as National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM). This awareness month highlights the need for improving national immunization coverage levels and encourages all people to protect their health by being immunized against infectious diseases.

HealthDay. Reports of people with the Swine Flu have risen this week. While only 29 cases were reported since July of 2011, the number jumped to 146 this week. Cases were reported in Hawaii, Indiana, Ohio, Utah and Illinois. (Gardner, 8/9) Full story

Time. The majority of patients suffering from metastatic cancer become resistant to chemotherapy. New research suggests that chemotherapy creates an overproduction of the protein WNT16B in fibroblast cells, which might create chemotherapy resistance. Drug Store News. The drug company Eli Lilly is currently developing an osteoporosis drug. The drug, Forteo, is in the trial phase and is showing that it may be provide "greater increases in bone mineral density and fewer new vertebral fractures." (Dearment, 8/7) Full Story

The New York Times. China has arrested almost 2,000 people in a crackdown on counterfeit drugs. The counterfeiters were selling the fake drugs online, and authorities seized approximately $182M worth. (Barboza, 8/15) Full Story

The Chicago Tribune. Is pay-for-delay almost obsolete? Pay-for-delay occurs when a brand name drug manufacturer pays a generic manufacturer to delay the release of a generic version of medication. It doesn't help consumers, but it does allow the brand name producer to continue dominating the market for awhile. New legislation in the works may be putting an end to the practice. (8/8) Full story
