June is National Safety Month
This month is National Safety Month, and there is still time to get the message out. Next week is dedicated to the theme 'On the Road, Off the Phone.' According to the National Safety Council (NSC) "Motor vehicle crashes remain the nation's leading cause of unintentional death. A major contributing factor is distracted driving. NSC estimates 23% of all motor vehicle crashes involve cell phone use behind the wheel."

HealthDay. A study has linked antibacterials and preservatives (commonly found in toothpaste and soaps) to an increased risk of allergies in children. Children with the highest levels of triclosan (an antibacterial agent) were almost twice as likely to have environmental allergies and food allergies. (6/21) Full story

MSNBC. US spending on oncology drugs is expected to increase by 20% each year for the next few years, to $173 billion by 2020. Oncologists are increasingly becoming aware of costs as they treat patients. Drug spend accounts for 10% of health care, but doubled between 2000 and 2010. (Beasley, 6/15) Full story

Health News Digest. Although still years from clinical development, scientists have developed a small-molecule-inhibiting drug that in early laboratory cell tests stopped breast cancer cells from spreading and also promoted the growth of early nerve cells called neurites. (6/21) Full Story

Huffington Post. Patients suffering from blood cancer who have tried other medications and failed now have another option. A panel of advisers for the FDA unanimously approved Krypolis from Onyx Pharmaceuticals. Although it doesn't cure the patient, in a limited study it appeared to lengthen their life. (6/20) Full Story

The Washington Post. An FDA bill that is meant to increase the safety of pharmaceutical drugs is expected to pass congress. The bill originally had a drug tracking system included in it, but that piece was dropped. (6/19) Full story
