This month is National Safety Month, and there is still time to get the message out.  Next week is dedicated to Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls, and the last week in June centers on the theme 'On the Road, Off the Phone.'

News You Can Use

The Huffington Post.  Did you know that the ADHD drug Adderall is a Class 2 controlled substance, and one of the most addictive drugs with medicinal use?  This article asks parents to use caution when their child is diagnosed with ADHD, and highlights the growing use of the drug by students taking it to increase their studying capabilities.  (Wedge, 6/13)   Full story    

 

The Wall Street Journal.  Merck will apply later this year for FDA approval of a new sleep drug, suvorexant.  It is the first drug that blocks orexin in the brain, a chemical that promotes alertness.  In experimental studies the drug outperforms a placebo by getting patients to fall asleep faster, and for a longer period of time.  (Weaver, 6/13)  Full story  

 

Industry News
Atlanta Journal-Constitution.  Anti-TNF drugs are often used to reduce inflammation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).  A new study has revealed another upside: patients taking anti-TNF drugs are more likely to live longer than RA patients not taking the drugs.  The downside?  They're also more likely to experience shingles.  (Doheny, 6/12)  Full Story

The Wall Street JournalA new analysis shows a 23% jump in type 1 diabetes, otherwise known as juvenile diabetes.  Researchers are looking at whether environmental factors or behavior can influence the onset of the autoimmune disease.  (Linebaugh, 6/10)  Full Story

Health Policy Matters

The Wall Street Journal.  The market for pharmaceutical drugs is expected to grow 3.1% each year through 2018, reaching $885B.  Generics are continuing to make an impact on sales, though, with patent expirations putting the industry at risk of losing $290B in sales.  The pharmaceutical industry has spent $1.1T on R&D in the last decade.  (6/13)  Full story  

 

JD Journal.  "CVS Caremark Corp and Rite Aid Corp filed an antitrust lawsuit against Pfizer Inc and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd accusing them of conspiring to keep generic versions of antidepressant Effexor XR off store shelves."  The drug is used as an antidepressant, and CVS Caremark and Rite Aid aren't the first companies to seek compensation over the delayed release of a generic version.  (6/14)  Full story
