Reminder: Health Care Reform Compliance
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act includes a list of documents that plan sponsors must provide to plan participants. One newly added document is a Summary of Benefits and Coverage (SBC). To help your plan adhere to providing an SBC, we have attached this link to a PDF from CVS Caremark. Many plans will be required to supply an SBC as soon as September 2012.

Fox News. Bath salts are a new type of drug sold for recreational purposes in the US. They're so new that many of the chemicals used in the synthetic drug are still legal. People who take the drug often experience hallucinations, and have been known to become violent. The recent attack in Florida has brought more attention to the product. (6/3) Full story

The Washington Post. Millions of people are infected each year with the sexually transmitted disease (std) gonorrhea. The World Health Organization (WHO) has published a statement that the std is growing resistant to drugs and may soon become untreatable. (6/6) Full story

Forbes. Authors of an opinion piece in the New England Journal of Science have offered their thoughts on the type of software necessary to curb prescription drug abuse. They state that a program accessible to both physicians and pharmacists would track opioid users best, and give alerts for potential abusers. Fox News. In a drive by the FDA to encourage innovation, they may allow women to try new breast cancer drugs earlier. Currently new drugs are only allowed for women in later stages of breast cancer, but soon women may be allowed faster access to a drug if companies can win approval. (6/4) Full Story

Boston Herald. A New England Health Institute study revealed that patients who suffer from chronic diseases, yet fail to properly adhere to their medication, create excess costs of $300B when they suffer from preventable complications.
