Cancer Survivors Day
The first Sunday in June is National Cancer Survivors Day. It is "an annual, treasured worldwide Celebration of Life that is held in hundreds of communities throughout the United States, Canada, and other participating countries. Participants unite in a symbolic event to show the world that life after a cancer diagnosis can be meaningful and productive."

The Chicago Tribune. A new study from Denmark has shown that taking aspirin or other forms of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may help protect against skin cancer. On the other hand, NSAIDs are shown to increase the risk of kidney cancer. With the risks associated with NSAIDs, doctors most likely won't start promoting them to prevent skin cancer. CNN. A new study revealed that people may be more likely to lose weight if money is an incentive. Offering money for people to perform healthy activities got people to participate. Later, 87% of participants continued to work on their healthy activities even though they were no longer asked to. (Landau, 5/28) Full story

Bloomberg. For the fourth consecutive year, the increase in the cost of health care is under 8%. Although the reasons for the slowdown aren't certain, possible explanations could be cheaper walk-up health clinics, lower costs for drugs and medical supplies and state laws requiring hospitals to publish prices. Kaiser Health News. Changes are being made to the psychiatric manual, The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. This article outlines the potential changes to the definition and diagnosis of addiction. The new manual is due to come out in May of 2013. (Andrews, 5/29) Full story

The Chicago Tribune. This week a panel voted to repeal part of the Health Law so that medical devices aren't taxed a 2.3% excise tax. Supported mainly by Republicans and a few Democrats, the repeal would cost the US Treasury $29B in lost revenue. The repeal isn't expected to pass the Senate. (Temple-West, 5/31) Full story

Kaiser Health News. The number of consumers who signed up for a health savings account rose 18% in 2011. That number reached 13.5M Americans in January of 2012, up from 11.4M in January of 2011. (5/31) Full story
