According to the American Celiac Disease Alliance:
* An estimated 3 million Americans struggle with the inherited condition * The only treatment for celiac disease is strict adherence to the medically prescribed gluten free diet * To comply with the diet, patients must carefully read all food labels to determine the presence of the forbidden grains wheat, rye, and barley |

New York Times. HDL cholesterol is the 'good cholesterol', and the goal is to raise your HDL cholesterol, right? Maybe not. Although high 'good cholesterol' numbers correlate with better heart health, raising a person's HDL numbers hasn't resulted in that person's health improving. This study may have a big impact on the drug companies currently working on a drug to raise HDL numbers. (Kolata, 5/16) Full story

Time. The National Institute of Health released a study that suggested coffee could increase a person's longevity. People who consumed 6 cups of coffee a day were found to have a 10-15% lower risk of death over non-coffee drinkers during the study period. This held true for both regular and decaf. San Francisco Chronicle. Genentech will be testing a new Alzheimer's drug on a select number of people with a genetic mutation that guarantees they will develop the disease - most likely in their forties. The drug is meant to attack the plaque that has been found to build up in Alzheimer's patients. (Colliver, 5/16) Full story

Outcome Magazine. An advisory panel for the US Food and Drug Administration has voted in favor of the FDA approving a drug for arthritis, despite concerns that it may increase the risk of cancer. Tofacitinib, created by Pfizer, would be the first new drug for arthritis released in the past ten years if approved. (5/12) Full story

The Washington Post. The Drug Enforcement Administration has stopped a Cardinal Health Facility in Florida from shipping controlled pharmaceutical drugs for the next 2 years. The facility has been instructed to put more effective controls in place after it was discovered the facility was shipping excessive amounts of oxycodone. (5/15) Full story

Kaiser Health News. In 2011, 52% of all employers offered domestic partner health benefits. The percentage in 2010 was 31%. The main reason for offering the additional health benefits was to gain and retain employees. (Appleby, 5/14) Full story
