Distracted Driving Awareness

Each April, FocusDriven increases its efforts to combat cell phone distracted driving and encourages individuals to drive cell free. We all have a role to play in making our roadway community safer. One action we can all take is to support driving cell free.

HealthDay.  New research suggests that men can reduce their risk of developing Parkinson's Disease by 40% by regularly consuming food and drink rich in flavonoids.  Examples of flavonoid rich food include tea, berries and red wine.  For women there was only a substantial risk reduction from eating berries a few times each week. New York Times.  Americans are cutting back on drugs and doctor visits, despite the recovering economy.  Prescriptions were down 1.1% and doctor visits were down 4.7% last year.  One age group that increased its visits and drug use were those aged 19-25, who increased prescription drug use for ADHD and antidepressant medication.  This is likely a result of the health law extending the age of children covered by parents. Industry News

USA Today.  Spending on prescription drugs by Americans was flat last year at around $320B.  After factoring in inflation, spending rose only 0.5%. Flat spending was due in large part to greater generic drug utilization and the volume of prescriptions falling by 1%.  (Johnson, 4/4Full story  

 

CBS News.  Another batch of counterfeit Avastin has hit the US market.  This is the second time since February that fake Avastin has reached the US through the UK, after traveling from Turkey.  Avastin is a drug used to treat cancer patients.  (Castillo, 4/5)  Full story  

 

 

Health Policy Matters

STL Today.  The Federal Trade Commission has announced that the merger of Express Scripts and Medco Health Solutions does not violate antitrust laws after voting 3-1 in approval of the acquisition.  This is the third time Express Scripts will double its size since 1998. Kaiser Health News. A new study estimates that insurance companies would have been required to pay $2B in insurance rebates in 2010 if the health care law would have been in place that year.  "The 2010 Affordable Care Act allows insurers to devote no more than 15 to 20 percent of their revenue, in most cases, to overhead, profits, executive pay and the like."  (Hancock, 4/5)  Full story
