News You Can Use

Forbes. How much does it cost a pharmaceutical company to develop a new drug?  Many companies state that the cost is $1B, but a new estimate puts that figure at $4B.  When the cost of failed new drugs is figured in, the cost of a new drug could be $12B.  (Herper, 2/10) Full story  

 

The Wall Street Journal.  The percentage of pediatricians 'firing' their patients who refuse vaccinations is rising.  From 21% of pediatricians in the Midwest to 30% in Connecticut, more doctors are insisting that families vaccinate their children or find a new provider.  (Wang, 2/15)  Full story

Industry News

ABC News.  A drug has been shown to help mice with Alzheimer's.  Bexarotene is a drug that's approved for humans with skin cancer, and it quickly cleared abnormal plaques of a protein called beta amyloid from the brain and improved memory in three different mouse models of Alzheimer's disease. It will likely be years before clinical trials have determined whether the drug is safe and/or effective in humans.  (Moisse, 2/15)  Full story  

 

The Wall Street Journal.  The FDA has notified 19 medical agencies in the US who are known to buy unapproved medicine that they may have bought a fake version of the cancer drug Avastin.  The counterfeit versions don't have the active ingredient in them.  No patients are known to have taken the drug.  (Rockoff, Weaver, 2/15) Full story  

 

Health Policy Matters

CNN. The Affordable Care Act helped to recover $4.1B in fraudulent health care schemes in 2011 through resources of $350M and data sharing.  This is the highest amount ever recovered in a single year and 58% more than 2009.  (Cratty, 2/14)  Full story  

 

MedPage.  The National Vaccine Advisory Committee (NVAC) voted 12-2 in favor of advising health care facilities to consider a mandate that all employees get the flu shot- if less than 90% of their employees are currently getting the shot. About 40% of health care employees receive the flu shot annually.  (Walker, 2/8)  Full story
