Holiday Decoration-Related Injuries Reached 13,000 in 2010
Last year, 13,000 people went to the emergency room for injuries related to holiday decorations. That number was up from 12,000 in 2009 and 10,000 in 2008.
This article lists some helpful hints to make it through the season with less risk of injury. Hints include using a fresh tree if putting up a real tree this year, and using a fire resistant tree if you favor artificial trees.

Daily Mail. A new vaccine is being developed that could tackle 7 of the 10 most lethal cancers, and it's showing potential to shrink breast cancer tumors by up to around 80%. HealthDay. For every 150 2-year-olds in the United States, one of them will visit an emergency room after accidentally overdosing on medication. This includes vitamins and over-the-counter medicine, along with prescription drugs. The number of toddlers accidentally overdosing has risen 20% in the past few years, and the CDC is educating parents on keeping medication out of children's reach. (12/13) Full story

WorldPharmaNews. Researchers at Loyola University Medical Center may have discovered a way to determine if an antidepressant will be effective for a patient based on a blood test. By testing for a protein in blood called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), researchers found that patients with higher levels of VEGF better responded to the drug escitalopram. The White House Blog. 2.5M more young adults now have coverage due to the new health care law where children are allowed to stay on their parent's insurance until they turn 26. In the near future, when many of today's young adults turn 26 and are taken off of their parent's plans, it will be illegal for insurers to deny coverage even if a person has an existing illness.
