The Columbus Dispatch. FICO, an analytics team out of Minneapolis, is proposing  that doctors use their Medication Adherence Score to find out which patients are good at taking their medication, and which patients might need more attention. (Gray, 7/30)  Full story

Forbes. The FDA has turned down past requests for statins to be sold over-the-counter, but that isn't stopping Pfizer from trying.  They want to get approval to sell Atorvastatin (Lipitor) right off the shelf. (Husten 8/3)  Full story

Health Policy Matters

ABC. Private insurance plans will be required to cover these preventive services without a co-pay or deductible beginning August 1, 2012: well-woman visits, screening for gestational diabetes, breast-feeding support, domestic violence screening and FDA approved birth control methods -- including emergency contraception.  (Pereira, Dolak, 8/1) Full story    

 

The Journal Times. The Senate Judiciary Committee approved legislation for the Preserve Access to Affordable Generic Drugs Act.  The Act will save the federal government billions of dollars in drug reimbursement costs by ensuring lower-cost generic drugs are available to consumers as soon as possible.  The FTC estimates these savings to equal 3.5B each year for insurance companies and consumers.
