Coalition News
Sound plan design is the key to driving desired performance and outcomes for your plan.  Clinical programs are another means to this end.  The coalition has negotiated a comprehensive suite of programs on behalf of its member-groups geared to educate health care providers and plan participants on cost-savings opportunities, such as:

· generic savings opportunities
· dose optimization to promote the use of cost-effective, daily-dose regimens
· specialty guideline maintenance, and many more

The coalition evaluates the programs and provides many free of charge when they've found them to be effective.  Members can choose from an entire menu of programs depending on their appetite for clinical interventions.  The coalition can help members look at their data and help make decisions about which ones would be most effective for them.

While highly recommended, the programs are voluntary.  Check out the clinical programs available to you by clicking here.

News You Can Use
Health Day.  Preventive drug therapy and lifestyle changes were both independently shown to cut down medical costs for patients at high risk for type 2 diabetes.  While drug therapy was cost-saving, lifestyle changes had a higher chance of preventing diabetes and were cost-effective, but not cost-saving.  (Gordon, 6/28) Full story

CNN.  The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists have changed their breast screening guidelines, stating mammography screening should be offered annually starting at age 40. The Preventive Services Task force has not yet decided to update their guidelines. (7/20) Full story

Industry News
NY Times. The Pharmacy Benefits Manager (PBM) Express Scripts has agreed to purchase another, Medco Health Solutions Inc.  The merger would result in the nation's largest PBM, but first the consolidation needs to be approved by the government - which is likely to have antitrust concerns. It was an unexpected announcement coming on the heels of Medco losing United Health to Caremark, and in the midst of Express Scripts' battle with Walgreen. (Abelson, 7/21)  Full story

FDA. The FDA has approved three flu vaccines to be made and distributed by six manufacturers for the 2011-2012 season.  (Burgess, 7/18) Full story

DrugChannels. The projected list of the top ten drugs of 2016 is out, and it's a little surprising.  The drug estimated to be the top seller in 2016 wouldn't even make the top ten list if it were out in 2010. (Fein, 7/19) Full story

Health Policy Matters

Fierce Medical Devices. Want to track and store your blood pressure readings?  There's an app for that. The FDA is now regulating medical applications for smart phones.  (Hollis, 7/20) Full story
