If you missed it, you can view the presentation from the link on our home page

Seemingly on cue, two articles appeared this week with good news about e-prescribing:

Pharmacy Practice News. Computerized prescribing and error reporting systems combined to reduce the rate of medication mistakes in the psychiatric unit at an inner-city Baltimore hospital by more than 80%, report Johns Hopkins researchers. (May Issue) Full story

Surescripts. The number of prescribers routing prescriptions electronically grew from 74,000 at the end of 2008 to 234,000 by the end of 2010 - representing 34 percent of all office-based prescribers and 36 percent of office-based physicians. (5/12) Report.

News You Can Use

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  The CDC has available a web-based toolkit for employers who want to promote a healthier worksite replete with advice and information on how to select, launch and measure the results of health promotion activities. In collaboration with this effort, AARP has created a series of videos to introduce HR managers and others who may be interested to the site.

Industry News

CVS Caremark. CVS Caremark announced that the company will launch a pilot of a real-time, integrated electronic prior authorization (ePA) capability, available to CVS Caremark Pharmacy Benefit Management clients to help improve the patient experience and speed access to prescription medications. (5/16) Press release

HealthDay. The FDA has announced that the controversial diabetes drug Avandia will no longer be sold at retail pharmacies beginning this November, due to the cardiovascular risks it poses to patients. (5/19) Full story

Health Policy Matters
US Senator Herb Kohl. The Senate Judiciary Committee has approved a bill that would prohibit secret court settlements that jeopardize health and safety when known risks about a product, including prescription drugs, are not made public. Seroquel and Xyprexa are cited as examples. (5/19) Press statement
