News You Can Use

Reuters.  U.S. prices for brand-name prescription drugs rose at a faster rate than costs for other medical goods and services over the last four years, according to a new U.S. government report. (Beasley, 3/14) Full story GAO Report

Reuters. A growing number of national chain pharmacies offer the generic form of a range of drugs - including anti-allergy medications, antidepressants, antibiotics and cholesterol-lowering drugs - for $4 for a 30 day supply. However, researchers found that less than 6 percent of people who could use such a program take advantage of it. (Pittman, 3/15)  Full story

ABC News. Statistics show the abuse of prescription painkillers has been on the rise for nearly two decades, but a new study found that primary care physicians may not be diligently monitoring patients who are taking opioid painkillers such as OxyContin, even those who are at risk for becoming dependent on them. (Corollo, 3/17) Full story

The Montreal Gazette. Some doctors are writing significantly more prescriptions for such powerful painkillers as Oxycontin than their colleagues, a new study suggests - a practice some are blaming on the influence of pharmaceutical companies. (3/16) Full story

Industry News

Drug Store News. The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday announced that Primatene Mist, the only over-the-counter asthma inhaler sold in the United States, no longer will be available as of Dec. 31 as part of an international agreement to stop the use of substances that damage the environment. (Johnson, 3/16) Full story

Health Policy Matters

Sunshine State News.  While newspaper editorial boards and some GOP leaders bang the drum for a state prescription-drug monitoring system, a zero-cost and seemingly more effective alternative is quietly proceeding in Florida. Proposed legislation would attack the "pill mill" problem by banning physicians from dispensing controlled substances at their offices or clinics. (Ward, 3/17) Full story

FDA.  The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) have launched a new pilot program that will allow parallel evaluation of relevant development and manufacturing data components, known as Quality by Design (QbD), of new drug marketing applications that are submitted to both agencies. (3/16) Press release
