From 1610-2010: Join us for the 400th anniversary of this landmark work. The BACH COLLEGIUM SAN DIEGO joins THE WHOLE NOYSE to present San Diego's debut performance of the 1610 Vespers to mark the 400th anniversary of this landmark work.
About our performance: There will be some unique aspects regarding our performances. We are performing with 10 principal singers (favoriti), along with support from 5 additional singers (ripieno). The vocal ensemble will use 4 women joined by 11 men consisting of high tenors, tenors, baritones and basses. Also, we will use 14 instrumentalists to include a Renaissance wind band, 2 violins, 2 organs, bass violin, violone and 2 theorbos. We will perform at A=465Hz (1/4 comma mean-tone), one of the common pitch and temperament standards of 17th century northern Italy. Additionally, the two performances will include the Gregorian Antiphons appointed for the Feast of the Assumption from 1st and 2nd Vespers sung by a schola under the direction of Stephen Sturk.
Claudio Monteverdi's 1610 Vespers has become one of the most frequently performed works in the European
canon prior to the music of J.S. Bach. Simply put, the Vespers
contains some of the most sublime music ever written displaying
Monteverdi's ability to combine the 'old' with the 'modern' style.
The performance will be repeated on Monday, 24 May at St John's Episcopal Cathedral, Los Angeles. There will ONLY be two performances.
