Vero Beach, FL - Ed. 2012.10.04 |

The months continue to roll on by and we welcome in October this week. That means the holiday season will be upon us next month. But, we won't go there yet. Let's linger while we can in the commencement of Fall! October is one of my favorite months. The days become shorter, the nights begin to cool and if we are lucky...even our daytime temperatures begin to inch downward. I absolutely love those first cool crisp days that make you feel refreshed rather than exhausted from the heat. We also get to enjoy a treat of colors as nature's palette begins to change. Check out the post below that includes a guide to fall foliage in different states. Then try to sneak away for a peek. My husband and I always enjoy telling each other that "There's a touch of Fall in the air." This continues with a tinge of sarcasm into the winter days that leave us Floridians shivering in 50 degree weather. I can't wait...How sweet it is! Which leads me to a fun event TONIGHT at the Indian River Mall in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Make sure to check out this event and the many others that are filling our 'Community Calendar' this month. We have distributed our October calendar which can be picked up around town. Let me know if you would like for your business to be a distribution point. I will be happy to get you some calendars as long as they last. Lastly, please make sure to send me all of your events. Our print deadline for the November calendar will be coming up on the 17th. We also have a couple of advertising spots left if you are interested.

CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS?
NOT A BAD PROFIT!
An amateur painter of cats bought this large abstract painting from a Goodwill store in North Carolina for $9.99. She had planned to re-use the canvas for one of her own paintings, but a friend suggested that she first look up the artist, Ilya Bolotowsky, whose name was on the painting. It turned out that Bolotowsky was an established artist and the painting was auctioned by Sotheby's in September for $34, 375!

WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH CORNSTARCH?
Last week we posted an article on "Forever foods that would outlast you." "When a friend read that cornstarch was on the list, she said, "I'm not surprised. I've had a box for at least 10 years because I have no idea why I bought it or what to do with it!" If you're like my friend you've been missing out on a terrific product. Cornstarch has been around for over 100 years. It's easy to use and can be used instead of flour for thickening 'lump free' gravy, sauces and soups, - just mix a little with cold water before adding. You can 'glaze' vegetables like carrots, beets and green beans with it. It's also used in puddings, pies, cookies and other desserts and it's Gluten free. Our Recipe of the Week features a classic white sauce that can be the beginning of something wonderful. We've also included a post on how to use it to make homemade clay. For other ideas, explore the Argo Cornstarch website. Click Here

COMEDY ZONE @ RIVERSIDE THEATRE This Weekend October 5th & 6th SHOWTIMES AT 7:30 and 9:30 $18 EACH BRIAN BRADLEY
Orlando native and UCF Theatre Graduate Brian Bradley is one performer who breaks down the wall between audience and stage. Difficult to categorize, Bradley combines acting, traditional stand-up comedy and improvisation in every show. Audiences are more than simply spectators--Brian casts them as co-stars. He has been an MC at the world famous Comedy Store and a regular member of the Comedy Store Players Improv group with Robin Williams, Andy Garcia, Jonathan Winters and Lucy Webb, and is now a comedy favorite at colleges and nightclubs throughout the country.
RAHN HORTMAN Rahn Hortman never thought that one day seasoned veterans of comedy would give him personal praise for his own stage show being "refreshing" and "a departure from the norm". But fittingly, nothing about Rahn's journey to the world of stand-up comedy has been normal. Born September 27th in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Rahn credits his 5th Grade Teacher as the first to nurture his natural urge to entertain. Impressed by Rahn's good grades, but frustrated by his penchant to distract classmates with his jokes, the comedian-in-training was granted the last fifteen minutes of class to do "his show" as long as he composed himself during the first forty-five! "From there I was hooked", he says wistfully. Rahn credits the earliest influences to his humor to Bill Cosby and Martin Lawrence. Bill Cosby's ability to tackle diverse subject matter without uttering a single curse word, and Martin Lawrence's natural gift of representing the "ordinary guy" combined to form the foundation for Rahn's vision. What resulted is a unique blend of profanity-free banter, with pointed observations about everyday people that leave no one safe.

BRAIN ENHANCER
Puzzles are a beneficial exercise for any age and this is a great site that everybody can enjoy! For children, puzzles have proven to enhance a child's development and there has been a suggested relationship between playing with puzzles and cognitive growth. For adults, fun and games may play a key role in getting your brain into shape. As with children, there is evidence that people who engage in puzzles, board games and other mentally stimulating activities can reduce the risk of memory loss and dementia as they age. So, try out JigZone and share it with your children. You can select puzzles and the degree of difficulty. Enjoy!

WARNING FOR PARENTS!
THE DRS. TV show recently had a segment about a child who swallowed one of those tiny toys that when immersed in water expand into a large sponge. The toy belonged to her older sister and the younger child apparently mistook it for candy. It did expand in her stomach and had to be surgically removed.
