                                      SPICE UP YOUR LIFE!

editor's note poka-dot

We think this issue will definitely add spice to your life, ...and we mean that literally as well as figuratively! Since fall is here, you might be cooking more than you did over the summer. If you are, we have included everything you need to know about spices, - including how to build a spice rack. We've even included a spicy recipe for a potpourri pot  that will  give your house  the scent of  fall!

They say that "variety is the spice of life" and you will find a variety of fun things to add to your calendar this week. The events are certainly beginning to pick up after the lackluster summer months.  Our October printed calendar will be distributed this weekend and the first of the week. This means we have already started to work on November. Please make sure to email me any of your events that you would like included. The deadline for the November printed calendar is October 17th and anything I receive by the Monday, prior to our Thursday email publication, will make into that week's FLASH! Happy Fall everyone and as always...HAPPY FLASHING!

 TEA CUP DIET TIP
Here's a good idea that should help you with your diet. Many foods, like ice cream, quote calories according to 1/2 cup servings. I know you are thinking ... diet and ice cream in the same sentence. Well, when you practice portion control which our tea cup system will help with...you can add ice cream to your diet food list. A convenient way of serving this smaller size portion is to use a tea cup filled not quite to the top. Most tea cups hold between 1/2 and 2/3 of a cup. Use a measuring cup to fill yours with a half cup of water and remember how far from the top it comes. This works for other foods, berries, yogurts  or soups, as well as desserts. What a fun way to use your tea-cups that get such little use these days! ENJOY!

 MARTHA STEWART'S SPICE SHELF

If you have 'antique' spices, Fall is a good time to sort them out and start over! By now you probably know that you should keep your spices in a cool, dry space away from the stove. (The fridge would be ideal, but who has room?) Spices never go 'bad', but they do lose their flavor. For the shelf life of spices, the McCormick Co. recommends the following:

Ground spices - 2-3 yrs.

Whole spice - 4 yrs.

Herbs - 1-3yrs. (We do keep these in the fridge.)

Seeds - 4 yrs. - (Except poppy and sesame seeds - 2 yrs.)

According to Martha, there are some essential spices that every 'well-dressed' kitchen should have. These should cover almost any recipe you try. For Martha's printable checklist, Click Here.

NOTE: Martha forgot one of our favorites...Curry Powder, - a yummy addition to many recipes!

Bullying is an issue that definitely deserves everyone's attention. As a community we need to stand up against any kind of violent behavior.  The entire community is invited and  encouraged to come to this event. Spread the word and tell anyone and everyone you know that fits the targeted audience. Children ages 10 to 17 years old and adults!

...AND SPEAKING OF HERBS

FALL GARDENING IN FLORIDA

This month, for planting herbs it suggests tarragon, rosemary, basil and mint. It also has tips for planting vegetables, bulbs  and for irrigation and fertilization of lawns and trees. Click Here

We invite you to visit the Saint Edward's  Website.

Saint Edward's offers a rigorous college-preparatory education that includes 19 Advanced Placement options as well as an Advanced Studies Program (ASP). All of the students who take AP courses take the exams so the average results reported here are a reflection of the entire group of course takers. In 2012 there were 116 students enrolled in AP coursework at Saint Edward's and those students took  a total of 226 exams.

The percentage of Saint Edward's students scoring a three or better on the AP exams has risen every year for the last five years (see chart above) and the proportion of AP test-takers at Saint Edward's who score a three or better (charted above) far outpaces the scores achieved in Florida and globally.

DANGER OF FLIP FLOPS AND BARE FEET
Bare feet running
According to Jordana Szpiro, DPM, a podiatrist and foot surgeon in Boston, flip-flops and other unsupportive sandals, which have no arch or structural support to the foot, can lead to stress fractures since your uncushioned feet become strained when they try to support too much weight. They can also cause extensor or flexor tendinitis since the muscles on top or underneath your feet overexert themselves while trying to 'grip' your shoes. She also advises against walking around barefoot, even if you're by the pool. "Aside from not giving your feet any support, going barefoot can also cause infectious skin diseases such as plantar warts and athlete's foot, which are easily spread poolside, in pedicure salons and in gyms."  Dr. Szpiro recommends comfortable sandals that also provide plenty of support.

A close-up look at the spice rack. We ARE out of cumin!  WEEKEND PROJECT...WHAT A GREAT IDEA!

Rossway Moore Taylor & Swan Foundation
Invite Indian River County Non Profits to Submit For Computer and Technological Grant

In 1999, Rossway Moore Taylor & Swan, Attorneys and Counselors at Law, originated from the desire to establish a diversified law firm to serve the ever evolving needs of the Treasure Coast. The founding partners have built a firm that combines a wide array of legal services with an emphasis on efficiency, cost effectiveness and compassion.

In an effort to maximize the Firm's charitable impact and to deepen their bond with the community, the partners created the Rossway Moore Taylor & Swan Foundation as a branch of the Firm devoted solely to giving. Funded with contributions from the Firm's profits, the Foundation becomes a partner in the Firm's success, so as to benefit the interests of the local community. Managed by partner Tom Tierney, the Foundation annually solicits proposals for assistance in the technological development of Indian River County charitable organizations.

To be eligible for a grant, an application must be completed and submitted by qualifying non-profits for consideration, beginning October 1 through December 1, 2012. In January, 2013, the Foundation Board will conduct a review of all submitted applications and make a determination of which entities will be awarded a grant for the current year. An application may be obtained by contacting our office at 772-231-4440. To review last year's winners, please visit www.verobeachlawyers.com.

VIDEO OF THE WEEK
The NFL 'DANCERS'!
On the heels of the bad 'ref call' that has received such attention over the last few days we thought it would be fun to have an NFL video this week. The NFL may frown on those celebration dances some players perform after a touchdown or a sack, but you have to admit that they're fun to watch. Here's a clip that has put together several of them. Enjoy!   CLICK HERE

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

  POTPOURRI SIMMERING POT

Forget those expensive scented candles or 'plug-ins'. You can bring the scent of fall into your home by creating this special brew.

 INGREDIENTS

5 bay leaves

2 tablespoon whole cloves

2 whole cinnamon sticks

1 teaspoon nutmeg

1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

DIRECTIONS

Fill a small saucepan with water. Add ingredients. Boil for a few minutes then turn heat down to simmer. Top off with water as needed and do not let it evaporate. Soon your home will smell like you've been baking all day!

You can experiment with other ingredients like lemon, lime or orange rinds or slices, apple juice or peels, vanilla or other extracts or spices. For Christmas gifts, fill small glass jars with dry ingredients, including a sprig of evergreen from your tree. Tie on directions with a pretty ribbon.

NOTE: Using a small uncovered crockpot is an easy way to keep it simmering.
