Vero Beach, FL - Ed. 2012.09.20 |

FALL BEGINS THIS WEEK!

This Saturday, September 22, 2012 is officially the first day of autumn. You won't see a significant drop in temperature, but you might have noticed it's a degree or two cooler in the mornings. Few leaves are changing color, but you may see some species of birds that you didn't see during the summer.. (An old joke says you can tell it's fall in Florida when the colors start to change on the license plates as our Northern friends head South.) It may be another month or two before there's any real change in the temperature, but we have other ways to know it's Fall. Football season is well underway and traffic moves a little slower around the school zone signs. You can eat outside in the evening without dying from the heat. If you're lucky enough to have an avocado tree, the fruit should be about ripe. The last of the baby turtles will be hatching on the beach. The main thing you may notice is that after the slower summer months your calendar is getting quite a bit busier. It's the beginning of "bazaar" and "carnival " season at our schools and churches. Pumpkins, gourds and acorn squash will soon appear in stores and roadside markets and many of the grocery stores are filled with the scent of cinnamon brooms. So, since we don't have the cool and colorful fall days that others have, I guess we'll just have to make do with "another day in paradise" and our other subtle changes that lets us know there is a 'Touch of Fall' in the air!

HEALTH TIP
HOW MUCH SODIUM IS TOO MUCH?
The recommended daily allowance for sodium is 2,300 mg. We know sodium retains fluid in our bodies that can show false weight gain, but it also can cause more serious health problems. If you're over 50 years old, have high blood pressure, diabetes or kidney disease or are African American, your sodium intake shouldn't go above 1,500 mg per day. Unfortunately, the average American consumes about 3,300 mg daily, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Most of our daily sodium comes from restaurant meals and processed foods, not the salt shaker on your table. Keeping that healthy range of 1500 - 2300 range in mind, check the labels. Many of those convenient low-cal frozen dinners are loaded with sodium!

LADIES,WHICH BODY SHAPE ARE YOU? What style looks best for your body type Straight/rectangular - 46 percent of women have this look - top looks about the same as hips and waist, more like a cylinder; if you have this body type, you can "pinch" your waist and exaggerate curves to avoid looking lanky or boyish. Go for ruffles and frills to add texture and volume (and femininity) to your figure. Steer clear of baggy jeans and track clothes if you don't want to look boyish. Triangle (Pear)- bottom-heavy; -20 percent of women; hips significantly larger than bust; if this is your body type, there are things you can do to make your hips look slimmer. Wear lighter colors up top and darker colors with fuller skirts on the bottom. Inverted Triangle - Avoid shoulder pads and wear dark colors up top to minimize that area.
X or the Hour Glass body type - shoulders and hips are around the same size and have a defined waist. When looking for clothes, go for things that hug and don't hide your curves. Diamond -When shopping for dresses look for the ones that draw attention to the top area with puffy sleeves, bright waistband or bold pattern. All those things are good for adding volume and diminishing the lower half. Rounded (Apple) - Soft fabrics, but don't wear clothing that is so tight that it shows every little bulge. Looser is better, but not a tent that makes you look like...well, a tent!
Dressing to improve what you don't like about yourself will makes it easier to accept your "built-in" body type.

BABY NAMES A CENTURY LATER
There were most likely a lot of "Johns" and "Marys" in this vintage picture from the Library of Congress. In 1911, they were the most popular baby names, but they aren't even in the top twenty now. The only names that are still in the top twenty are William, which was #2 and is now #3, and Elizabeth, which was #7 and is now #11. To read the most popular names of then and now, Click Here. |
