SEPTEMBER MUSINGS
I can't believe it's already the middle of September! I remember when I was a child time seemed to creep along at the slowest pace imaginable! Now I hesitate to blink because time seems to be a passenger on the eurail-high-speed-train that travels at over 380 miles an hour and I have been kidnapped. If we think back to just yesterday and the beginning of summer and we play that same time frame forward...guess where we are...Christmas! Yikes! Well, our Jewish friends don't have to wait to celebrate one of their holy days. They will be celebrating Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) beginning this Sunday. I'll tell you more about that in a post below, and don't miss our Recipe of the Week for a traditional Jewish recipe that we can all enjoy. On a personal note...I want to give a special 'shout out' to my husband, Howell L. Watkins, II, who turns 60 today!! No doubt he thinks time is flying by as well. My wish for him is that the best of times still lie ahead! Forge on! Enjoy every day FLASHERS and make a point to stop every now and then to take a break from your hectic schedule. Take time out to enjoy the moment and those you hold dear! Those are the moments that matter and will long be remembered! ENJOY LIFE!

SCHOOL BUS SAFETY
Parents should be reassured when their students board their yellow buses every morning because buses are the safest vehicle on the road. The National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) says riding in a school bus is seven times safer than traveling by car or truck. Most school buses do not have seat belts. The design of school bus seats uses compartmentalization, which negates the necessity of seat belts. It's not unlike an egg in a carton. The seats have higher backs and are cushioned all the way around, which helps keep students in place in the event of an accident. Very few deaths and injuries to children involve a school bus. Most mishaps take place outside the bus, so here are some precautions you and your children can take if they ride the bus to school. * Don't let your children arrive at the bus stop too early. They may be tempted to get into mischief while waiting for the bus. * Make sure your children know what to do if they miss the bus; come back home; or if at school, report to a teacher - and never accept a ride from a stranger. * If the stop is a long way from home, plan and talk with your child where they can go in an emergency. * Make sure they wait well away from the road and stay well back until the bus comes to a full stop and the door opens. * Set a rule that there is no running, pushing or horseplay while waiting, getting on or getting off the bus. * Tell your children to come straight home from the bus - no detours.

3402 Ocean Drive ~ Vero Beach, FL 32963
For those that missed my post last week, let me introduce myself. I am Janyne Kenworthy and I am excited to provide a 'market pulse' update and/or useful information each week on FLASH. I found a great article this week written by Stephen Fishman of Inman News that exposes ten awesome tips from the IRS for home-sellers when it comes to taxes. If you have recently sold your home or plan to sell it, you will most definitely want to take a look at this list. Now that the market has picked up and home sales are on the rise, I thought this would be a great time to share this information with my fellow FLASHERS! Click Here to access the article. Check in next week when I will give you a full assessment of our local market and the trends that exist. In the meantime, Please get in touch with me if I can assist you with any of your real estate needs. |

IT'S APPLE SEASON!
Since apples are now available in our supermarkets year round, we don't necessarily recognize the importance of 'apple season', but maybe we should. Apple storage technology has become very sophisticated. An Australian study showed that apples can be kept in cold storage for up to 10 months and still be good, but maybe not as tasty as a fresh picked one. That's why they are now available year round. However, that's also a good reason to store the fresh apples you purchase in the refrigerator when you get them home. Currently, 100 varieties of apples are grown commercially in the U.S. and the best of the crop are shipped to market beginning in September (officially "Apple Month") and continuing through November. Here are some interesting apple facts:
- A cosmetic dentist at New York University says apples are the perfect teeth cleaning and whitening tool.
- Australian Researchers Report Apples May Reduce Asthma Risk.
- Apples May Melt unwanted Pounds Away Faster. Adding apples and pears to your daily diet may melt pounds away faster, according to new research from Brazil published in March 2003. Overweight women who ate just 300 grams of apples or pears lost more weight on a low-calorie diet than women who didn't add fruit to their diet.
- Apples Provide Whole-Body Health Benefits. (Maybe that's why "An apple a day keeps the doctor away!")

FUN WAY TO SERVE COOKIES AND MILK!
Whether you are making a snack for your child or planning a slumber party...this is a fun way to serve fresh baked cookies and ice cold milk. Just plan ahead and be on the lookout for glass bottles. This is a fun thing to look for in the great thrift stores we have in Vero. You might consider using the little bubble bottles of water filled with milk and a fun straw. You can keep it simple and buy cookies with a whole in the middle or you can whip up a batch of your family's favorite cookies. Just make sure that you punch a hole in the center. Now all you have to do is pull out the camera and snap some photos!

THE DANGER OF ENERGY DRINKS
Recently Dr. Oz reported on 'energy drinks' on his television show and his findings were disturbing. Energy drinks are one of the fastest growing drinks in America. They promise to make you more alert, focused and invigorated. Energy drinks do achieve their goal, but it may be at a cost to your health. They can cause significant side effects and there are insufficient studies to show that they are safe. Most energy drinks contain some combination of caffeine, B vitamins, sugar and herbs. Caffeine is the concern because these drinks can have anywhere from 80 to 500 mg per serving! Up to 200 mg of caffeine a day is considered safe. In excess, caffeine can cause serious side effects including insomnia, rapid heart rate and elevated blood pressure. Over 200 mg of caffeine can cause blood pressure to spike by up to 14 points. Because of this, people with high blood pressure should avoid consuming energy beverages altogether. People can build a tolerance to caffeine as well. Over time, you may find yourself needing more doses throughout the day to achieve the same effect.
NOTE: These drinks are especially popular with teens and college students who frequently don't get enough sleep. If you have a child in this age group, warn them accordingly. |
SAFETY REPORT ON LUXURY CARS
While most modern cars offer good protection in head-on collisions, safety experts say small overlap crashes are a different story. (Like hitting a tree or side-swiping a car.) Those crashes primarily affect a car's outer edges which aren't well protected, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The IIHS recently said that only three of 11 midsize luxury and near-luxury cars earned good or acceptable ratings in the new overlap frontal crash test. Overlap crashes are responsible for a quarter of all fatal front-end collisions. The Acura TL and Volvo S60 earn good ratings, while the Infiniti G earns acceptable. It might surprise you to learn that the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Lexus IS 250/350, Audi A4 and Lexus ES 350 earn poor. All of these cars are 2012 models. For ratings on all types of crashes in a table format, Click Here

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

COKE BRISKET
You don't have to be Jewish to enjoy this delicious twist on a traditional Jewish dish. Brisket is quite high in fat, so serve it on special occasions. Cola makes the meat very tender.
3 onions, sliced 4 1/2 to 5 lb. beef brisket, well-trimmed 4 cloves garlic, crushed Salt & pepper, to taste 1 tsp. dried basil 1 tbsp. paprika 1/4 cup apricot jam 2 tbsp. lemon juice 1 cup diet cola
1. Spray a large roasting pan with non-stick spray. Place onions in pan; place brisket on top of onions. Rub meat on all sides with garlic, seasonings, jam and lemon juice. Pour cola over and around brisket. Marinate for an hour at room temperature or overnight in the refrigerator.
2. Preheat oven to 325°F. Cook covered. Allow 45 minutes per lb. as the cooking time, until meat is fork tender. Uncover meat for the last hour and baste it occasionally. Remove from oven and cool completely. Refrigerate overnight, if possible. Discard hardened fat which congeals on the surface. Slice brisket thinly across the grain, trimming away any fat. Reheat slices in the defatted pan juices.
Yield: 12 servings. Reheats and/or freezes well.
NOTE: We think this dish would be a good one for the crock pot too.
