happy labor day   editor's note poka-dot                                             LABOR DAY HOLIDAY ON MONDAY, AUGUST 3rd

There will be no school on Monday for Public Schools and the Post Office, banks and all government offices will be closed. Ever wonder how some of these holidays got their start?  Well Here's the scoop. Originally Labor Day was promoted by the Labor Unions as a holiday for organizing workers. It was officially recognized as a federal holiday in 1894 by President Grover Cleveland. Now it is seen as the last long weekend of summer rather than a day for political organizing. (Although, since this is an election year, there will probably be a lot of campaigning going on!) Everyone who can, takes a vacation on the first Monday of September. Friends and families gather, and clog the highways, and the picnic grounds, and their own backyards to bid farewell to summer. What will you be doing? If you need ideas, you'll find several suggestions in this issue and on our calendar! Speaking of our Community Calendar...Please submit all events for September and October now.  Our September calendar will be distributed next week and we are already busy working on October. I certainly appreciate all of your submissions.  Click Here to send information to my way. THANKS!

Labor Day US Unemployment Rate Rises to 9.6 54000 Jobs Lost 300x273 Labor Day: US Unemployment Rate Rises to 9.6%, 54000 Jobs Lost INTERESTING FACT

In researching the origin of Labor Day for this issue, we came across this surprising statistic. A New York Times article written in June of this year reported that only about 12 % of the U.S. workforce is currently Union members. There has been a steady decline in membership since the 1950s when membership was estimated at 40% of the workforce. The actual origin of Labor Day reads like a dramatic movie script. If you're a history buff, you will enjoy reading this article from the PBS website. Click Here

CHUCKLE OF THE WEEK
Son: "Hey, Dad, how about letting me use the car?"
Father: "I've told you before, I'll let you use the car when you cut your hair."
Son: "But, dad, Jesus had long hair."
Father: "Yes, son, you're perfectly right. And he walked everywhere he went."
photoshop tutorial how to make rainbow
EAT A RAINBOW!

Teach your kids to "eat a rainbow" by making it fun to eat fruits and vegetables of a variety of different colors to get the best all-around health benefits. Each different color of a fruit or vegetable contains different health components that are essential to our health so the "rainbow" is good for grownups too!

Red Fruits and Vegetables
Contain nutrients such as lycopene, ellagic acid, Quercetin, and Hesperidin, to name a few. These nutrients reduce the risk of prostate cancer, lower blood pressure, reduce tumor growth and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels, scavenge harmful free-radicals, and support join tissue in      arthritis cases.
Orange and Yellow fruits and vegetables
Contain beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, flavonoids, lycopene, potassium, and vitamin C. These nutrients reduce age-related macula degeneration and the risk of prostate cancer, lower LDL cholesterol and blood pressure, promote collagen formation and healthy joints, fight harmful free radicals, encourage alkaline balance, and work with magnesium and calcium to build healthy bones.
Green vegetables and Fruit
Green vegetables contain chlorophyll, fiber, lutein, zeaxanthin, calcium, folate, vitamin C, calcium, and Beta-carotene. The nutrients found in these vegetables reduce cancer risks, lower blood pressure and LDL cholesterol levels, normalize digestion time, support retinal health and vision, fight harmful free-radicals, and boost immune system activity.
Blue and Purple fruits and vegetables
Contain nutrients which include lutein, zeaxanthin, reservatol, vitamin C, fiber, flavonoids, ellagic acid, and quercetin. Similar to the previous nutrients, these nutrients support retinal health, lower LDL cholesterol, boost immune system activity, support healthy digestion, improve calcium and other mineral absorption, fight inflammation, reduce tumor growth, act as an anticarcinogens in the digestive tract, and limit the activity of cancer cells.
White fruits and vegetables
Contain nutrients such as beta-glucans, EGCG, SDG, and lignans that provide powerful immune boosting activity. These nutrients also activate natural killer B and T cells, reduce the risk of colon, breast, and prostate cancers, and balance hormone levels, reducing the risk of hormone-related cancers. NOTE: Potatoes are not included as they consist mostly of starch and should be consumed sparingly.

Child drinks the milk from a bowl of cereal CEREAL TIPS

Clemson University has done a complete study on breakfast cereal and some of the results are surprising. For instance, did you know that you should drink all the milk in your cereal bowl? Not only is milk a good source of protein, but many vitamins and minerals are sprayed onto the cereal during the manufacturing process and go into the milk. The study also suggests this good idea. Add one to two cups of cereal to cookie recipes for additional texture, fiber and nutrients. To read the complete report with other tips and facts about what to look for in a cereal, Click Here.
10 FEMALE CELEBRITIES WHO ARE AGING GRACEFULLY
...AND 10 MORE WHO AREN'T!
Brigitte Bardot We could have predicted that Diane Keaton would be on the  "good" list, but it's sad to see some of the ones on the "not-  so-good" list. We would never have recognized Brigitte  Bardot, the beautiful French actress and 'sex symbol' of the  60s, (pictured) but then we read that she was turning 78 next  month! I think the press should cut her a little slack, don't  you? To watch the slide show, Click Here

  WEEKEND PROJECT...WHAT A FUN IDEA!

This is a fun craft that you can do with your kids. Use old credit cards/gift cards, cut to size. Glue on scrapbook paper, pictures, stickers, embellishments etc... paint two layers of mod podge or varnish to seal. At the end of the day you will have a fun memento that will bring a smile to your face. Enjoy!

 IMPORTANT ADVICE!

Hopefully this will never happen to you, but if it does, heed this advice. If you are riding in a car and the driver has an attack or passes out, do not turn off the ignition! This may be your first instinct, but it freezes the power steering and power brakes and you have no control. Instead, shift the transmission into neutral so you can steer the car until it rolls to a stop. Pull the hand brake or try to step on  the driver's foot brake with your left foot to bring the car to a stop.

Austin Hunt, Executive Director of Harvest Food and Outreach Center, Kerry Bartlett, Executive Director of the Indian River Community Foundation and Scott Sanders, founder of Hunters Against Hunger, celebrate with Sanders' three sons, Clayton, Tate and Beau. This donation marked the 500th pound of meat donated to Harvest Food and Outreach Center by Hunters Against Hunger

Aided by a $5,000 grant from the Indian River Community Foundation, Hunters Against Hunger launched earlier this year to bring harvested wildlife to the tables of the less fortunate. The organization works with federally certified meat processors who prepare the game for donation to local food banks. The wildlife comes from various sources such as hunters willing to donate a
portion of their game to the cause and also ranch and grove owners who must remove overpopulated animals that are causing damage to their property Founder Scott Sanders said the organization has an initial goal of providing 50,000 pounds of meat to local hunger relief organizations. Their biggest challenge is developing relationships with hunters, ranchers and grove owners who may have the interest and resources to support the cause. For more information on Hunters Against Hunger visit www.huntersagainsthunger.org

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

ROASTED 'RAINBOW' VEGETABLES
Here's an easy way to cook a rainbow of vegetables and it makes a whopping 24 servings which makes it great to bring to a pot luck supper. If you aren't feeding 24, reduce the quantities accordingly.

Ingredients
  • 8 zucchini, peeled and chopped
  • 1 eggplant, peeled and diced
  • 8 carrots, diced
  • 16 cherry tomatoes
  • 2 red onions, sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 yellow bell pepper, sliced
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 2 bay leaves, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemonjuice
  • 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest
  • salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  1. In a large bowl mix the zucchini, eggplant, carrots, tomatoes, onions and peppers with the oil, rosemary, thyme, bay leaves, oregano, garlic, lemon juice, lemon zest, salt and pepper. Cover and chill for at least 2 hours, and preferably overnight.
  2. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  3. On a large roasting pan, roast the vegetables, uncovered, for 20 minutes, or until the tomatoes have split and the edges of some of the vegetables are starting to crisp. Remove from the oven and stir before returning to the oven for another 20 minutes. At this time reduce heat to 200 degrees F (95 degrees C) and continue cooking until vegetables are tender, turning every 20 minutes.
