Going Back to School

PUBLIC SCHOOLS START ON MONDAY!                         editor's note poka-dot

It's almost here! The first day of school is probably a child's most exciting day of the year,...new friends, new teachers, maybe even a new school!  Even as an adult, I can still vividly remember the excitement I felt. I just loved all of my new school supplies and always felt quite important carrying my stack of new notebooks and textbooks that we covered with brown paper grocery bags. (We had no backpacks....however did we do it?) The  height of your stack was something that indicated your age. So the higher stacks summoned a sense of respect. Then there was the excitement of seeing old friends, finding out who was in my homeroom class, meeting the new kids, deciding what to wear...so many exciting things! I was always given instructions from my mother to be nice to the new kids and invite them to sit with me at lunch. I passed the same advice to my children and I encourage all parents to do the same. In today's world it is also a good idea to tell them not to tolerate bullying of themselves or others. Take the time to explain the best way to report any bullying. This has become a major problem in schools, and we need to do what we can to stop it.

HOW MUCH SLEEP DO WE NEED?
We have published this before in FLASH, but with school starting, we thought it was worth printing again. The amount of sleep you need depends on various factors - especially your age. Consider these general guidelines from Mayo Clinic for different age groups:
Age group Recommended amount of sleep
Infants 14 to 15 hours
Toddlers 12 to 14 hours
School-age children 10 to 11 hours
Adults & Teens 8 to 9 hours

If you haven't visited the Outlets lately you are going to want to put it on your list of 'things to do!' New stores have recently opened and Restoration Hardware is set to open on August 30th. Restoration Hardware is one of the most innovative luxury brands in the home furnishings marketplace and offers furniture, lighting, textiles, bath ware, decor, outdoor and garden, as well as baby and child products. Additionally, White House Black Market and PUMA are planning to open at the center this fall. Ann Taylor's LOFT, and Chico's recently opened. So many wonderful reasons to plan a shopping outing! ENJOY!

'SNEAKY MOM' TIP!
If your child won't eat vegetables, try this. What kid doesn't like spaghetti? If the sauce is based on tomatoes sautéed in olive oil, and the pasta is whole wheat, you've already got a healthy dish going. Sneaky extra: Boost the sauce's nutrition by adding minced steamed carrots or stirring in pureed baby-food carrots. Your kids will never notice the extra veggies. Next time you may want to try adding another baby food veggie or one  that's gone through the food processor. Shhh! We won't tell!

  WEEKEND PROJECT...WHAT A GREAT IDEA!

champion - dance

This is a great project and one that also is timely for back to school and a place for all the books. You can 'glam it up' or take it down a notch depending on your paper selection. CLICK HERE for complete instructions.

Crops in the Midwest have suffered from the lack of rain and because of that, consumers will see increases in the prices of meat, eggs, dairy and corn products. (The cost of fruits and other vegetables should not change much because the main areas for producing those crops are not under drought.) With corn, soybean meal and sorghum used as major ingredients for animal feed, costs to feed animals will be rising sharply in the next few months. That increase in animal feed cost will be passed on to the consumer toward the end of this year and the start of 2013. However, initially, meat costs are expected to decrease because of a large supply entering the market as producers rush to sell their livestock to escape the inflated expense of feed. You may want to purchase meat for your freezer when this drop occurs because it won't be long before they start on the uptick again.

FAST 'BACK-TO-SCHOOL' BREAKFASTS

On the first day of  school, I always poured my children pancakes in the shape of the grade they were entering. We always did really well for the first week or two and then the breakfast time became a bit more hectic. Here's a list of easy breakfast ideas for kids:

  • Yogurt - Fruit Smoothie - Don't add too much sugar and use frozen yogurt, not ice cream.
  • Egg 'Mc Mom' - just like the fast food English Muffin sandwich with egg, cheese and bacon. Even easier, try sprinkling on Hormel's real bacon bits (found by the salad dressings).
  • Banana wrapped in a slice of bread or toast with Peanut Butter. If you're in a hurry, this is a good grab-and-go type breakfast. The peanut butter has protein and the banana contains lots of potassium.
  • Oatmeal - Instant oatmeal is a quick solution that provides necessary vitamins and minerals. Get the plain variety and add a little sweetness with honey or sugar-free pancake syrup. You can also toss in some raisins and nuts and a dash of cinnamon
  • Fruit bowl, topped with Yogurt and some Cheerios - Fresh fruit is not only delicious, but is virtually fat-free. Yogurt contains calcium for strong bones and bacteria that helps with digestion.
  • Cheese Toast - Preferably whole wheat with a piece of your child's favorite cheese on top and placed under the broiler or in the toaster over.
  •
NOTE: You can mix up pancake batter ahead of time and keep it ready in a pitcher in the fridge.

tide podsWARNING TO PARENTS!

DANGER OF TIDE PODS

Since the debut of Tide Pods almost 300 kids have been sickened by consuming the highly concentrated laundry detergent found in the small laundry packs. Kids are mistaking the colorful look of the packs for candy and are eating them!  Some kids have also been reported as developing rashes and burning eyes caused by exposure to the liquid in the pods. Tide Pods are sold in large containers which look a lot like popular candy containers on the market. This double threat has led to Tide rethinking their design of this product. Tide is now in the process of creating a redesigned Tide Pod packet and will add a double latch lid to the product container. Meanwhile keep all detergents out of children's reach!

                                              TROUBLE LOSING WEIGHT?

burn fat How To Turn Your Body Into A Fat Burning Machine!TRY DR. OZ'S METABOLIC FAST

What's the difference between fasting and metabolic fasting to lose fat? According to Dr. Oz, the reason you may have trouble losing weight is that your blood sugar levels are high. This not only stops you from burning fat and losing weight, it's also very unhealthy. Regular fasting slows down your metabolism and causes your blood sugar levels to rise due to the stress fasting places on your body. A metabolic fast provides your body with the nutrients it needs to stimulate your metabolism to push your body into fat-burning mode. If you want to try it, you can print Dr Oz's plan.
