Vero Beach, FL - Ed. 2012.26.07 |
|
Summer is slowly slipping away and August has arrived to escort it out and to usher in fall. On August 20th our public schools will open their doors and welcome back our community children. Football season will be underway, and fall activities will begin. My, it's hard to believe that summer is almost over. This weekend will be a busy one for shoppers with the State's back-to-school Tax-Free Holiday on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. (Read what items will qualify in the post below.) Plan to head to the Indian River Mall for their 'Back To School Expo' on Saturday from 10:00 - 2:00. You will also find other tips in this issue to help you get the kids ready for the first day of school. If you want to plan ahead, you can find the entire school calendar for the year by clicking here. Though we don't celebrate any major holidays in August, there are a number of days with special significance that we think our FLASHERS will enjoy...It's a positive list. On August 1st, "Respect for Parents Day" and "Sisters Day" are recognized. The first Sunday in August is "American Family Day," "Friendship Day," and "National Kids Day," which was created in 1994. Don't forget to mark your calendars for the primary election on the 14th. So, enjoy the fresh new month of August FLASHERS and why not take advantage of a second chance at a fresh new 'New Year's' start. The school year is after all the start of a new year! Make it a good one! :)

KEEPING TRACK OF KIDS' STUFF!
While you're buying those tax-free school supplies, make sure that you include one of those indelible 'Sharpie' marking pens. When you get home, as you unpack your purchases, it's a good time to put the child's I.D. on each item. Your phone number may be even more important than the child's name since not all items are lost at school. Things get left behind on buses, field trips, parks and playgrounds. Prevent a loss before it happens!
|
RUNWAY FASHION TIP FOR THE GUYS!
Prints are in for men, not only in shirts, but pants too. If you don't think you would be caught dead wearing printed pants, then you're too young to remember those golf pants of the 80's! John Daly (pictured) has always been known for his colorful outfits. A lot of men's casual fashions have begun on the links, so keep an eye out for more color both on and off the course this fall! |

NECK PAIN?
Sooner or later, we all get that real "pain in the neck". (Our FLASH researcher got it recently from craning her neck while backing out of a parking space!) To help, Dr. Oz suggests this easy exercise. Bend over from the hip and let your arms dangle toward your feet, allowing your head to hang without tension. Gently swing your head from side to side to loosen the neck, lengthening the muscles there. This also helps to stretch out your back. Bend your knees as you slowly come back up to a standing position. (Let us know if it works for you.)

SHOULD YOU BUY AN EXTENDED WARRANTY?
Harvard economist David Cutler says "Warranties make no rational sense. The probability that a product will break has to be substantially greater than the risk that you can't afford to fix it or replace it." Most products are already covered for the first year. If you're buying a $400 item, ask yourself if you could afford to repair or even replace it after a year instead paying for a warranty for breakage that may never happen. According to Cutler, "The replacement cost of $400 is not a risk you need to insure under any circumstances." With technical improvements happening so fast (think computers!), you may not even want a product to 'last forever' anymore. |

"WHY CAN'T THE BRITISH SPEAK ENGLISH?!"
We do wonder why the original Colonists dropped so many words when they arrived here. During the London Olympics, you may have heard a few strange words and phrases in some of the interviews..like "lift" (elevator) or ""flat" (apartment). If you would like to learn more of these, there is a complete list on the web.

WHAT A GOOD IDEA!
Use a LifeSaver as a birthday-candle holder on big cakes or cupcakes. This idea came from REAL SIMPLE magazine. They suggest using candies in the original rolls for the best fit. LifeSavers sold in big bags are larger and don't work as well. |

It's never too soon to learn about volunteering. To help fund Indian River Habitat for Humanity's Scholarship and Education Program, volunteers construct and decorate wooden birdhouses fashioned from scrap lumber gathered at Habitat job sites. So, when 6-year-old Garrett Lundgren's grandpa gave him a birdhouse kit, Garrett set to work. The birdhouses are on sale in the Habitat Home Center ReStore. Garrett's grandpa, by the way, is Habitat's CEO Andy Bowler, who is proud to know that his grandson is already building Habitat "houses."

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

When our extended family gets together, it's almost always pot-luck with everyone bringing a special dish. From my sister Suzy Gard, we always request her layered salad. It's easy; it's pretty and you can make it the night before. (We're happy that Suzy will be moving to Vero soon and we're looking forward to more salads!)
SUZY'S LAYERED SALAD
1 head iceberg lettuce (or lettuce and spinach) cut into pieces and placed on the bottom of a glass bowl
4 hard boiled eggs, chop and layer over lettuce 8 slices cooked bacon, crumble and layer over eggs 1 sm. onion, chop and layer 2 diced tomatoes
1 pkg. frozen peas - thaw do not cook and spread over top
Mix 2 cups of mayonnaise, 2 teaspoons sugar and enough milk to make an icing. Spread over peas, covering to edge of bowl. Then spread 4 ounces shredded Cheddar cheese over all. Cover with foil and refrigerate. Will keep up to 2 days if necessary. When ready to serve, toss as with any salad.
NOTE: You can vary the ingredients according to your taste, adding things like sliced water chestnuts, chopped celery, garbanzo beans, avocado or crumbled blue cheese in their own layers.

Trinity Episcopal Church in Vero Beach - 2365 Pine Avenue, Vero Beach FL 32960
The Space Coast Symphony closes its Summer Series with Call of the Champions. This powerful program features music written for or about the Olympics. Many of the works fit nicely into the fanfare style that characterizes the opening ceremonies; others capture the solemnity of the occasion, culminating in the Olympic Oath. Taken together, they provide a soundtrack for the entire drama of the Olympic phenomenon. This captivating program will be presented with archival and news footage, original film, dramatic photo choreography, and several special surprises.
