 OLYMPICS BEGIN  FRIDAY NIGHT!

editor's note poka-dotLondon-Olympics-2012

The opening ceremony of the  Olympics will begin at 9:00 Friday night. You can watch it on NBC. Those who have been involved in the rehearsals have used adjectives like "Amazing!" and "Jaw dropping!" The extravaganza is titled "Isle of Wonders" which comes from a quote in Shakespeare's The Tempest. It will take the audience through various stages of British history and promises to be so spectacular that it's suggested that you allow the little ones to stay up late. It's also supposed to have touches of humor and we don't recall many laughs in previous ceremonies, so a chuckle here and there will certainly add to the fun. It's anticipated that the world wide TV audience watching will exceed one billion viewers!  We certainly will be watching and hope that you will be too! GO USA!

LAST MINUTE OLYMPICS PARTY!

AROUND THE WORLD BUFFET

It's not too late to call a few friends and invite them over to watch the Olympics.

Here's our idea for an easy 'around the world'  menu. Set up a buffet with the following:

  • Mexican Nachos and Cheese
  • Chinese (take-out)
  • Japanese sushi (pick up)
  • Italian Pizza (delivered) and Caesar Salad (bagged produce)
  • English 'Fish and Chips' ( frozen fish sticks and fries served with malt vinegar)
  • Mini French Pastries and small Chocolate Eclairs (from the freezer department)
  •  .......And from the USA...Bud-Light and California    Wine in a cooler!

You could place small signs with the country's name in front each item on folded index cards to make sure your guest get the message! Or use flags from different countries. ENJOY!

DID YOU KNOW?

Celebrating by candlelight? Cooking Spray makes an easy Candlestick Cleaner. Spray the inside of a votive holder with a thin coating before dropping in a tea light. After the candle has burned down, the remaining wax will slip out.  .....And if you're using candlesticks and the wax drips on them and hardens, put them in the freezer for about 15-20 minutes. It will be easy to chip  off the wax.

homeless-with-cellphone  FREE CELL PHONES?

Have you seen those commercials giving you a number to call to get a free cell phone from our Government and wondered what the deal was all about? Well, unfortunately, like a lot of Government programs that begin with the best of intentions, it isn't working out too well. The program, called LIFELINE, is overseen by the FCC and was intended to help low-income Americans who may need emergency services. However, observers complain that the program suffers from poor oversight, in which phones go to people who don't qualify, and hundreds of thousands of those who do qualify have more than one phone. Since each phone allows for a limited number of minutes (usually 250 min.) each month, many are getting additional phones. (One young woman admitted to having six!) In 2008 the Government spent over $7 million for phones and monthly bills. Last year it cost $1.6 billion for 12.5 million wireless accounts. Guess who's paying for this? Most of the funding is coming from the Universal Service Fund fee that you will find tacked on at the bottom of your wireless or land-line phone bill. Congressmen from both parties have become concerned about this after one Senator even received an offer in the mail for a free  phone herself. The FCC is investigating the situation and the Agency hopes to save $200 million this year. We hope so too!

Children wearing sunglasses: Sun risk to children's eyesight 'ignored by parents' HOW TO BUY SUNGLASSES
Last week we told you the difference between UVA rays and UVB rays and their affect on your body. It's also important to protect your eyes from these damaging rays that can lead to cataracts or macular degeneration later on. Sunglasses should be labeled to block 95% of UVA rays and 99% of the more damaging UVB rays. Preferably get gray, brown or green lenses. Yellow, gold and amber lenses provide less overall brightness protection, but they provide excellent depth perception, which make them perfect for skiing and other snow sports Modern lenses need not be dark to provide protection, but old sunglasses are not as effective and should be replaced. Size matters too. Small frames let UV light in from the sides, so get large glasses or ones that wrap around. And we know you want them to look good too, so you may want to check out this chart to find the best shape for your face. Click here.

Important Note: The natural lenses of children's eyes are even more susceptible to damage. For the sake of their future vision, give them sunglasses and see that they wear them.

Picture framed used as a vanity tray

 WHAT A GOOD IDEA!

Re-purpose an old frame for a vanity tray that's pretty as a picture. Place a piece of colored paper or fabric inside as a finishing touch.

St. Patrick's Day craft - Planting seeds on a shamrock sponge

5 THINGS  TO DO WITH A SPONGE

1.SPROUT SEEDS - Wet the sponge and put on a plate. Fill some holes with seed, place in a sunny window, mist every other day and watch them spout! Transplant when they are about an inch tall. (The sponge can be cut in shapes with scissors as pictured.)

2.REMOVE LINT AND PET HAIR - A fresh cellulose sponge works like magic when swiped across garments or furniture.

3.SOFTEN CLOTHING - Dampen a sponge with softener and toss in your washer. During the cycle, the sponge will slowly release the softener for fresh, fluffy results!

4.MOLD-PROOF PRODUCE - Keep a clean, dry sponge in your refrigerator drawer. The sponge will adsorb moisture and keep your produce fresh.

5.MICROWAVE IT - A new study shows zapping sponges and plastic scrubbing pads in the microwave for 20-30 seconds can kill bacteria, such as E. coli, that can cause illness. It will be hot!

WARNING FOR PARENTS!

You may have seen the recent news report about the tragic death of a 12 year-old boy on a beach in New Jersey. He and his brother were digging a tunnel in the sand when the tunnel collapsed on him. Unfortunately, this happens more frequently than you might think. According to a 2007 report in the New England Journal of Medicine, there were 31 deaths over a 20-year span. Sadly, we knew a family in Miami who lost their son this way when he was digging in a sand-pile. This is such innocent fun that most of us would never think to caution our children about. Please take this opportunity to do so.  Also, remind them to always fill any holes they dig on the beach to prevent a hazard to others that might trip and possibly break a leg. Also they are a possible trap for those nesting sea turtles.

SPEED UP YOUR METABOLISM
woman biting into red pepper
Isn't it hard to love those people who can eat anything they want and never gain a pound? Chances are they inherited a great metabolism in their genes. The rest of us have to find other solutions. And as we get older, our body's ability to burn calories slows down even more.  Your metabolism slows about 5% for each decade after forty.  WebMD just released this slideshow of things you can try. Some of it is old information, but you might learn a new trick or two. Click Here

It's never too soon to learn about volunteering.   To help fund Indian River Habitat for Humanity's Scholarship and Education Program, volunteers construct and decorate wooden birdhouses fashioned from scrap lumber gathered at Habitat job sites. So, when 6-year-old Garrett Lundgren's grandpa gave him a birdhouse kit, Garrett  set to work.  The birdhouses are on sale in the Habitat Home Center ReStore. Garrett's grandpa, by the way, is Habitat's CEO Andy Bowler, who is proud to know that his grandson is  already building Habitat "houses."
