SUMMER DAZE!                              editor's note poka-dot

hot-sun-thermometer.jpgWhew! It's hot!....but then again, not as bad as the states to the north of us. Can you believe those tempera-tures? How terrible it was for those that found themselves without power last week. No Power, no air, not even a plug in fan! The moral of the story...It can always be worse! How very fortunate we are to live in Vero near the coast. It may get hot here, but there is always at least a leaf or two moving from a breeze coming in off the AtlanticLet's all count our blessings and in this issue, you'll find a few ideas to help you get through these hot summer days!

There are a lot of crazy 'special days' in July. This Saturday, July 14th is "National Nude Day" when nudists are encouraged to celebrate their bodies!!?? (We think we'll skip that one...even though we are all FLASHERS!..Just not that kind of FLASHER!) However, Sunday, the 15th is our kind of celebration. It's "National Ice Cream Day" and you'll find a great ice cream idea in a post below. If you don't have time to try it out make sure to watch for our upcoming Kilwin's FLASH Deal. That will be a popular one. Speaking of FLASH Deals....This week's Deal will have you cooling off as well. Don't miss out on a fun Kayak trip or Stand Up Paddle Board lesson. FLASH is forming a group to take advantage of the deal to head out on the water. See the post on the bulletin board.  If you are interested in meeting other FLASHERS .... Please join us! So, ENJOY this week's issue of FLASH and stay cool!

 Michael Phelps, the American swimmer

I wonder if Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps gets. . . .

 SWIMMER'S EAR?

There's nothing like a dip in the pool or ocean to cool off from this summer heat. More people spending time in the water this time of year and consequently there are more people (especially kids) complaining about water in the ear. It's because the ear canal runs down and backward, so gravity is working against you. A child will frequently jump around shaking his head when this happens. Here's a better fix. A Reader's Digest Health report suggests that you do this. Dry your ear with a towel then tilt your head to the side with the waterlogged ear toward your shoulder. Grab your lobe and pull it down to drain. If you're prone to infection, ask your doctor whether alcohol drops can help.

Mixing ice cream into jello.FLAVOR YOUR OWN STORE-BOUGHT ICE CREAM

What a great idea! Think of all the flavors you can make.  Just buy a half gallon of your favorite brand of vanilla or chocolate ice cream or frozen yogurt and let it soften in a bowl...or a few bowls if you want to create different flavors. (We especially like McCormick's variety of flavorings.) Experiment by mixing various flavors into the softened ice cream. Food coloring can also be added and the kids will love to help! *Refreeze in plastic containers. Here are some good combinations:

                                                   WITH VANILLA ICE CREAM

Bits of fresh Peaches or Mangoes (with Rum Flavoring if desired.)
Lemon Flavoring or fresh Lime Juice - "ditto" above
Coconut and Rum Flavorings and Canned Crushed Pineapple
Crushed Butterfinger Candy bits and McCormick Butter Flavoring
Maple Flavoring and Chopped Pecans
Crushed Oreos
WITH CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM
Coconut Flavoring and Shredded Coconut (you can even toast it by cooking it on the stove with a tad of butter until it turns golden.
Peppermint Flavoring and crushed bits of Peppermint Candy
Now, - see what combinations you can come up with!
*You can also refreeze in individual paper-lined muffin tins or, for an ice cream pie, in pre-made cookie crumb pie shells and top with whipped cream.
champion - dance    WEEKEND PROJECT
We found this fun project online and thought it was unique and adorable enough to share with our FLASHERS! Isn't it super!? You can usually pick up one of these large antiquated console TV sets at one of our area thrift stores. If you are lucky enough to find one, simply take out the television and prime and paint the housing unit. You will then have to have a dog bed made that fits into the unit. It's always best if it has a zipper so that you can easily wash it. You can pick a fabric and paint that matches the decor of the room in which you would like to keep this.  We think you and 'Man's Best Friend will just love this!
ENJOY!

THE SCOOP ON ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS
Artificial sweeteners are used in many products that we eat and drink today. While only 70 million Americans consumed artificially sweetened products in 1987, more than 160 million do today. Artificial sweeteners lurk in your diet soda, sugar-free ice cream and cookies and countless other foods. While their development has been helpful for dieters and diabetics, you may have wondered about the safety of these substances. Here is the current information on these products:
Sucralose (includes Splenda brand)
It is 500 times sweeter than sucrose, stored in body fats, and does not affect blood sugar levels. Its use is too new to know the long-term effects, but it appears the most promising and is the best one for cooking.

            Aspartame (includes Equal, Nutrasweet brands)
Several studies have found it has adverse health effects. This sweetener stays in your body longest, and it cannot be heated  or it turns into formaldehyde.
                  Saccharin (includes Sweet'N Low brand)
Long-term data suggest it may be one of the safest sweeteners, even if some of the data is not positive. Once rumored to cause cancer because of experiments with rats, the FDA now says that there is no clear evidence that it causes cancer in humans. The FDA has dropped it from the list of carcinogens and the formerly required warning label on the product has been removed.

Pinkberry Mango
TIP FOR FREEZING MANGOES
If you love mangoes, like we love mangoes, you'll love this tip. Instead of cutting them in to cubes, cut them in large, flat slices and freeze them in a single layer on a cookie sheet. As soon as they're frozen, use a spatula to loosen them and seal them in a freezer bag. Long after the season is over, you will be able to pour out whatever quantity you want. To eat just the mango thaw just slightly for about five minutes. This way it is sort of like a mango popsicle and with some 'squirty' whipped cream....hmmmm you will love it! It will be a bit mushy if you let it thaw all the way. Freezing mangoes will also be great for milkshakes, mango bread, or flavoring ice cream as we mentioned above! Man, can we go for mangoes!

SOME TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR 'COOL'

.

fan, summer
We all know to wear light clothing, drink plenty of water and stay out of the sun on these hot days, but here are a few tips you may not know.

1. Eat small meals and eat more often. The larger the meal, the more metabolic heat your body creates breaking down the food. Avoid foods that are high in protein, which increase metabolic heat. Eat spicy food. Although this may be the last thing you fancy in hot weather, curries and chilies can stimulate heat receptors in the mouth, enhance circulation and cause sweating, which cools the body down.

2. Apply a cool pack or run your wrists under a cold tap for a bit. Because a main vein passes through this area, it helps cool the blood. Keep a spray bottle of water and a small towel handy when you're outside to refresh your face and/or your body

3. Take a tepid bath or shower just below body temperature, especially before bedtime. Although a cold shower might sound more tempting, your body generates heat afterwards to compensate for the heat loss.

4. Sleep on a feather or down pillow with a cotton pillowcase. Synthetic pillows will retain heat. You can also put your pillowcases in a plastic bag in the freezer for a chilly bedtime treat.

 5. Close your eyes and picture snow. Research has shown that the body reacts to these daydreams, reducing its overall temperature....Really!?!?

Baby love - two moose calves touch noses in tall grass

EVERYONE IS TRYING TO STAY COOL!
All kids love to play in the sprinklers in the summertime and these moose calves in Anchorage, Alaska are no exception. (I guess it even gets hot in Alaska!) Apparently, it's not uncommon for moose to wander into backyards up there. Notice how the little guy goes to get his sibling to share in the fun while Mama keeps watch; catching a little of the spray herself.
SCENE AROUND TOWN

Sebastian resident Christine Lantz (middle front row, 5th from left or right), representing GoLine's one-millionth rider,  is welcomed by GoLine employees and guests at the Main Street bus stop in Sebastian on June 21.

"The GoLine has helped people commute from the most northern part of the Sebastian area to points throughout the community in Fellsmere and Vero Beach," noted Beth Mitchell, Executive Director of Sebastian Area Chamber of Commerce. "This is a huge asset for our community that has a tremendous impact on economic development efforts.
Among the requirements  Indian River Habitat for Humanity homebuyers must complete is a 10-week series of classes. The series takes place three times a year and focuses on arming Habitat homebuyers with information vital to their becoming successful, responsible homeowners.  The classes, taught by Habitat staff and/or volunteer specialists,  are part of the Homebuyer Program, which also includes working a specified number of  Sweat Equity hours and establishing a savings account. Each element must be successfully completed before the individual or family can close on their Habitat home. Pictured above is the summer homebuyers class.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
072611-162407-sun-tea-primary.jpg

REMEMBER SUN TEA?

Remember the expression, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." Well, using that philosophy, there's no better way to make a good situation out of a heat wave than a jug of sun tea. Sun tea was a fad a few years back, with stores selling special jugs to make it, but it's been around for many generations. It's easy and fun;  the kids can help and it keeps the kitchen cool! Here's how you make it.
  • 1 large glass pitcher or jar with lid (that will accommodate 8 cups of water)
  • 6 to 8 regular size black tea bags. A healthy bonus - black tea is loaded with antioxidants!
Directions:
  • Fill pitcher with 8 cups of cold water then add the bags. Seal with lid.
  • Place pitcher in full sun - getting 2 to 3 hours of sunlight-up to 4 hours if you prefer a stronger brew. You can add flavorings, like lemon or mint, while brewing if you choose.
  • After brewing, strain and refrigerate until fully chilled.
  • Add ice cubes and any additional flavorings  before serving.
