Vero Beach, FL - Ed. 2012.05.07 |
|
It is hard to believe that it is already July and that we are half the way through 2012. WOW! How are those New Year's resolutions coming along? Hmmm..... Back to July. Yesterday was the official Beginning of the "Dog Days of Summer" which mark the hottest, most sultry days of summer. The name comes from the ancient belief that Sirius, also called the Dog Star, in close proximity to the sun was responsible for the hot weather. Tomorrow is July 4th. How many FLASHERS caught our typo last week with reference to Thursday being July 4th? Ooops! We hang our heads at FLASH and apologize for the confusion. We planned to send FLASH a day earlier than usual to give you one more quick reference for things going on in town for the 4th, last minute entertaining tips, and other fun 'All American' tidbits of info. We just inadvertently typed our usual Thursday publication day. So sorry!
We will be at the Vero Beach 4th of July celebration. Please come by and say hi. As we have often said before...We ENJOY meeting our FLASHERS! Have a wonderful and safe 4th! How lucky we all are to live in this great country!! Remember to make sure you are registered to vote so that you can enjoy one of our most important freedoms! MEDAL OF FREEDOM WINNER
ANDY GRIFFITH - DEAD AT 86
Andy Griffith, a fine American and North Carolina's "Favorite Son," died yesterday. Known for his role as the folksy sheriff of Mayberry on "The Andy Griffith Show." The University of North Carolina music graduate also starred as a murder-solving Southern attorney in the television series "Matlock" during the 1980s and 1990s. Both shows are still seen almost daily on TV re-runs. He was also known for his roles in movies and on the stage, as a producer and as a Grammy Award-winning gospel singer. President George W. Bush honored Griffith in 2005 with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for "demonstrating the finest qualities of our country and for a lifetime of memorable performances that have brought joy to millions of Americans of all ages." How ironically fitting it is to be able to honor Andy Griffith in our special 4th of July issue!
Thanks for the memories, Andy. We'll miss you...and already do!

WORLDWIDE LOST AND FOUND Did you know that there is such a thing as a 'worldwide lost and found' on the internet? Unfortunately, we didn't find the website that 'user friendly', but their results are impressive. In the U.S., 105,339 items were reported lost, 48,624 items have been found. Worldwide, 126,409 were reported lost and 53,325 items were found. If you have lost or found something locally or in your travels here or abroad, this could be a helpful site. If you go to the homepage, click on the 'lost' or 'found' bar and scroll down to view the list of categories. (You have to register if you're posting or claiming an item, but not just to view the list.) They range from baggage and animals to jewelry and medical items.

What did the two flags say to each other?
Nothing. They just waved.
....or maybe you'll like
Teacher: Who wrote the lyrics, "Oh say can you see?"
Student: An eye doctor.
....or a favorite from Jay Leno I don't know why people were surprised that France wouldn't help us get Saddam out of Iraq. After all, France wouldn't help us get the Germans out of France!
. ....and one last chuckle!
The elderly American gentleman arrived in Paris by plane. At French Customs, he fumbled for his passport. "You 'ave been to France before, monsieur?" the customs officer asked sarcastically.
.
The old gent admitted that he had been to France previously. "Zen, you should know enough to 'ave your passport ready for inspection." The American said, "The last time I was here, I didn't have to show it."
.
"Impossible. You Americans alwayz 'ave to show your passport," said the Frenchman.
.
The gentleman gave the Frenchman a long hard look and said, "Well, when I arrived in Normandy in 1944, I couldn't find a Frenchman to show it to!"

VIDEO OF THE WEEK
A DIFFERENT KIND OF PARADE!
This is the dearest and most amazing video we've seen in a long time. It was on ABC news awhile back and I don't know how we missed it. These baby ducks were trapped on a building ledge. The mother duck left and the babies tried to follow. You won't believe who the 'hero' was and how he led them to safe waters! Click Here

GET RID OF THOSE PESKY FRUIT FLIES
.
Enjoying the wonderful fresh fruits that are the treat of the summer season, but are getting annoyed with the fruit flies they attract? We have the solution...and it really works! My mangoes and tomatoes began to attract quite a few fruit flies and this is how I got rid of them. Pour apple cider vinegar into a small dish and add a couple of drops of dish soap. Those little pesky flies are attracted to the solution and that will be the end of your problem!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
FUN WITH BERRIES
 1) Our patriotic flag is created with blueberries, bananas and strawberries. Simply place them on wooden skewers in the pattern created above. 2) Whipped Cream berries. Cut off tips of strawberries and carve out a bit of the strawberry. Then pipe in some whipped cream and garnish with a blueberry on top. 3) Dip strawberries in melted white chocolate and then dip in blue sugar crystals. 4) Last but not least....create some red, white and blue ice cubes by freezing fruit pieces inyour ice trays. This one is always a big hit! ENJOY!
