.editor's note poka-dot  TODAY IS THE FIRST DAY OF SUMMER
(BET YOU THOUGHT IT WAS ALREADY HERE!)

Known as the 'summer solstice,' today, June 21st is the start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere  and simultaneously, the start of winter in the Southern Hemisphere. It's also the longest day of sunlight for places in the Northern Hemisphere and the shortest day for cities south of the equator. In fact, at the North Pole, the sun will not set at all today.  Because of the extra hours of daylight, it's a favorite date for celebrations. Why not have one of your own with a cook-out tonight and maybe a back yard volleyball game?
A SUMMER 'BUCKET LIST'
Next on your list of things to do ... create a 'Summer Bucket List'. We often hear 'Bucket List' discussed in terms of what we want to do within our lifetime.  Well, how much fun to put a lifetime into a few summer months. This may not include those grandiose things that take up space on your lifetime list. But rather those fun things you always wanted to do, but haven't gotten around to planning.  Get together with your FUN family and friends and brainstorm to come up with a list of events. Just imagine what fun ideas you'll come up with to do over the summer! Have the more organized one in the group type up your list and give each activity an assigned day.  Copies can be made and distributed to everyone to 'ink-in' the dates. You can then assign a person to coordinate a particular activity.  Tackle one thing a week and you will end up with a summer to remember! There's the idea...now all you need to do is ... DO IT!  You'll be so glad you did.  ENJOY!

BEWARE OF BUGS!

Summer Bumblebee_3means that the kids are outside,... and so are the bugs! About 2 million people in the U.S. are severely allergic to insect stings and that results in about 50 deaths every year! Bee, tick, mosquito and other bites can also cause serious diseases even if you aren't allergic.  There is some misinformation circulating about how to treat both normal and allergic reactions to bites, so you might want to learn what you actually should do. (One e-mail falsely suggests putting a penny on a bee sting!) Here's the government website that gives the true story on the dangers and how to treat the bites. It also suggests that anyone who is allergic should wear a Medical Alert bracelet. (See post below.) To read the government article, Click Here

DYING TO PLAY GOLF?
HERE'S A FAIRWAY TO HEAVEN!
We know we have a lot of golfers among our FLASH subscribers and we thought this might be of interest. Last October in Bellevue, Washington, the Sunset Hills Funeral Home announced that it had created  "the nation's first golf-themed memorial park."  The Memorial Golf Park consists of one golf hole, complete with tee box, fairway, bunker and putting green. Including both full-casket burial plots and cremation placements, 1,281 golfers can be buried on the hole. This is no joke, but it did remind us of the chuckle below!

CHUCKLE OF THE WEEK

The pastor loved to play golf and one Sunday morning, it was such a beautiful day, he couldn't resist. He called his associate and said he wasn't feeling well and asked him to please conduct the service. He then drove to a golf course in a nearby city where he wouldn't be recognized to play a round of golf. This came to St. Peter's attention and he immediately reported to God that the pastor should be punished. God just smiled and said it was okay. Shocked, St. Peter said, "But, sir, he's having a wonderful time and he just made a hole-in-one on number 14." " I know," God replied, "But who's he going to tell?"

Mike
Rivera
On stage, Mike uses his natural 'high-energy' to describe his experiences growing up in a fun family. Off stage he colors pretty pictures, watches Toy Story a lot, and forces the 3 little people that live in his house to watch tapes of his act. He has been winning the laughter and applause of audiences all over the Country, as well as the attention of many people in the entertainment industry. Mike has been heavily scouted by Comedy Central, MTV, and most recently Twentieth Century Fox.
Trish Keating

Trish Keating's style of comedy is one part social satire, two parts personal pain and most parts attitude! Trish revs up her own brand of sarcasm and self-depreciating humor onstage regularly all over the country. Trish began performing as a way to survive Catholic school where early on, Sister Mary Joan could sense her sinful need to get laughs. Trish was often sent to the "naughty corner" and she's been there ever since! After earning a B.A. degree from Florida State University in Theatre, Trish began her comedy career by performing daily at Universal Studios, and then moved to the Windy City to workshop with the legendary Del Close at Second City, The Annoyance and The Improv Olympic. Appearances in various film and television productions followed including: two episodes of E.R., film Return to Me directed by Bonnie Hunt, Chicago Hope, Cupid, and Early Edition as well as many other theatricals and the Bailiwick Director's Festival in Chicago.

three raspberriesTHIS IS A 'BERRY' GOOD IDEA!
(Extend the life of your berries)

I received this tip in an e-mail from a friend and she swears it works! Berries are delicious, but they are delicate. There's nothing more tragic than paying $4 for a 1/2 pint of raspberries, only to  find that fuzzy mold growing on them the next day. When you get your berries home, prepare a mixture of one part vinegar (white or apple cider probably work best) and ten parts water. Dump the berries into the mixture and swirl around. Drain, rinse if you want (though the mixture is so diluted you can't taste the vinegar,) and pop in the fridge. The vinegar kills any mold spores and other bacteria that might be on the surface of the fruit, and voila! Raspberries will last a week or more, and strawberries go almost two weeks without getting moldy and soft. So go forth and stock up on those pricey little gems, knowing they'll stay fresh as long as it takes you to eat them.

SCENE AROUND TOWN
Left to right: Kerry Bartlett, Executive Director of Indian River Community Foundation, Michael McGee, Children's Home Society of Florida's Indian River Advisory Board Member, and Jan Swink, Executive Director of Children's Home Society of Florida, Treasure Coast Division.
Children's Home Society of Florida, Treasure Coast Division, is pleased to announce it has received a $50,000 grant from the Indian River Community Foundation to establish "Homeless in High School," a new initiative to provide safety-net services for high school students not already involved in the foster care system. In a recent report, Indian River County Public Schools identified 33 students in 2011-2012 school year that have been identified as homeless. The funding from Indian River Community Foundation will provide for at least 13-14 youth with the much needed housing, financial support and other services they need so they can continue on a path that breaks the cycle of homelessness. The average cost per client is $3,800 annually, presenting Children's Home Society of Florida with a challenge to raise an additional $100,000 to fully meet the community's need. For more information or to learn how you can help support the Homeless in High School initiative, contact Michelle King, Director of Development, at 772-344-4020 ext. 231 or visit chsfl.org.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
Everything-but-the-Kitchen-Sink Cookies including fritos or chips

Makes 1 1/2 dozen
Ingredients
1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup packed light-brown sugar
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 egg, plus 1 egg white
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp kosher salt
1 cup of your favorite sweet add-ins (I like peanut butter chips, sweetened coconut flakes and dark chocolate chips)
1 1/2 cups of your favorite salty snacks (see list below for suggestions.)
Directions

Preheat oven to 375F.

Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper and set them aside. Cream the butter and both sugars on medium speed for a few minutes, until they look light and fluffy. Add the vanilla and eggs and continue to beat on low speed until well combined.

Whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture in two batches, beating slowly after each addition, until fully incorporated.

Break up the salty snacks into smaller cookie-friendly pieces and dump those in as well. Use a spatula to stir them together. You can gauge this to your taste.

Place imperfect balls of dough on cookie sheet an inch or more apart.  Bake, rotating sheets halfway through, until cookies are golden brown, about 16 to 18 minutes.

Variation: Here's a list of other tasty mix-ins that you can stir (one or more)  into the cookie dough. Mix and match your favorite snacks!
Honey-roasted nuts -  Whole espresso beans - Sprinkles
White chocolate chips - Tortilla chips -Toffee bits -Yogurt raisins
Trail mix - Wasabi peas - Breakfast cereal - Doritos - Granola - Salted nuts
