FATHER'S DAY THIS SUNDAY!
HOW IT ALL BEGAN...
Father's Day has become an international event, though its origin is not clear. The most popular theory is that it began with a woman. Having been raised along with five siblings by her father after her mother died, Sonora Smart Dodd wanted her father to know how special he was to her. Since he was born in June, she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington. The event was publicized and recognizing that it could be good for business, the Association of Men's Wear Retailers began promoting it. After years of unofficial celebrations, other organizations and States began lobbying Congress to declare an annual Father's Day. Finally, in 1924, President Calvin Coolidge declared it a national event, but stopped short of making an official proclamation. It was not until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers. Six years later, it was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972. In the U.S., it is always celebrated on the third Sunday in June. Now you know "the rest of the story" and you'll find some great ideas to help celebrate in this issue.
....AND FLAG DAY IS TODAY
- REMEMBER TO FLY YOUR FLAG!
It's been 135 years ago today that our Congress adopted Betsy Ross's original stars and stripes design. The design has changed over the years, but what it stands for has not. Flag Day is always celebrated on June 14th and everyone is encouraged to 'show our colors'.

LAST MINUTE FATHER'S DAY GIFTS!
WIRELESS MOUSE - Whether he uses a laptop or desktop, Dad might appreciate the convenience of a wireless mouse. Besides, those small 'mouse panels' built into laptops can wear out. (It happened to one of our staff and can only be repaired by shipping the computer back to the manufacturer.) It's available at most office supply stores and range in price from around $30-$60.
"IN THE GARDEN OF THE BEAST" - A non-fiction book that reads like fiction.
The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America's first ambassador to Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history. This NY Times best seller is a story of love, terror and an American family in Hitler's Berlin. Great for a Dad who's a history buff.
CUSTOM GIFT BASKET FOR DAD - Put together a gift basket of Dad's favorite things... some home baked cookies, his favorite candy bar, a bag of pistachio nuts, maybe a bottle of wine or a few cans of different imported beers, favorite snacks - like pretzels or beef jerky, special barbecue sauce, hobby stuff (fishing lures, golf or tennis balls) ...and whatever else he really, really likes!

SUMMER READING - BOOKS RECOMMENDATIONS FROM OUR SUBSCRIBERS
FLASHER BOOK SUGGESTIONS
From the Rev. Dale Glading...Radical by David Platt ~ A New York Times bestseller...The idea of separating Christian faith from the materialism of American life threads its way throughout these chapters. This is a thoughtful book that received an average 4 star rating on Amazon.
From Linda Konrad..."At the age of 57, I discovered the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris. Starting with book 1, Dead Until Dark, I devoured the entire series (there are at least 13 books), then immediately started over with book one and read the whole series again! So Dead Until Dark is my pick for a great summer read."
From Cynthia Callander...Mary Alice Monroe recently visited the Vero Beach Book Center for a 'Sea Turtle Benefit' author talk and book signing. Her newest NY TIMES bestseller BEACH HOUSE MEMORIES is an incredible summer read.

VIDEO OF THE WEEK
NO, THIS ISN'T A PRESENT FOR DAD!
This is a video of a 26 ft. tall (about 3 stories high) sculpture of Marilyn Monroe by Seward Johnson in her famous scene (shown here) in the movie, The Seven Year Itch. It created some controversy when it was first exhibited in Chicago recently, but now it's been welcomed with open arms at one of the celebrity's favorite playgrounds. The statue was dismantled and traveled by truck at a cost of $40,000 for seven days from Chicago to Palm Springs where it was unveiled on May 24th. The video gives you an idea of the size of the statue compared to the people on the street in Chicago. Click Here

LOCAL COMPANY UNVEILS TWO NEW TECHNOLOGY ADVANCES
|
The marriage vows state "til death do us part," but maybe these two didn't know how long they would live! Two 115 year-old giant tortoises at Austria's Reptilian Zoo have split up after 36 years together.
Things are far from amicable between the two former lovers. Bibi, the female turtle, has become so sick of her companion Podi that she bit off a long part of his shell. Podi has now been moved to another cage after other attacks. Zoo workers have tried everything from counseling and romantic food to bonding games, but it seems these two have decided to go their separate ways. :(

DALLAS RETURNS!
WEDS. NIGHTS @ 9 PM ON TNT
Many of our Flashers may have been too young to watch the original DALLAS twenty years ago, but a new version made its debut last night. As TV critic John Gavin describes, "the fighting, fussing, fornicating, finagling, first family of Texas, has returned to steal, murder or ravish everything it missed during the show's original 1978-1991 run." Dallas was the longest running nighttime soap opera in TV history except for its own spin-off, Knot's Landing. (We wonder if that will return, too.) Many of the original cast is back, including J.R. (Larry Hagman), but the kids from the old show are now adults, so there is a whole new generation to add to the mayhem. If you missed the show last night, you can catch up with it and the show's history, at the TNT website. You can even watch some of the episodes from the original show. Click Here

GOOD NEWS FROM THE REAL ESTATE MARKET
AND NEW HOUSING TRENDS
A Reuters Poll in May of the latest housing data in 10 states shows signs of hope in even the most battered real estate markets, notably Florida. In addition to Florida, the other states were: Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Another report from the Sherwin-Williams' website notes a change in building trends. Because of the economic recession, many people are recognizing the value of downsizing their homes, as well as their lives. There are fewer mega-mansions on the drawing boards. Extra square footage in bathrooms, hallways, and other areas is being re-assessed. Instead of expanding in size, homeowners are looking to expand in quality: not a bigger kitchen, just a nicer, more efficient one. Homeowners are also more likely to splurge on better floor covering, light fixtures and other decorative features as the overall size becomes smaller.
(NOTE: FLASH is looking for a Realtor to sponsor a monthly post like this with news and tips about current local sales, mortgage info, trends, staging a home for sale, etc. - Possibly featuring a particular property or Open House. Our rates are reasonable and our posts receive a lot of attention. If you're interested, contact us . Click Here
