CRAZY REASONS TO CELEBRATE!
Welcome June! So many nice things are ushered in with June: School's out for summer, loosened schedules, vacations, outdoor living and cook-outs with family and friends WOW...let the fun begin! Last week we told you that there are a lot of special occasions in June. Here are two pretty silly ones, but we'll use any excuse to buy ice cream. Today, June 7th, is National Chocolate Ice Cream Day and June 12th is National Peanut Butter Cookie Day. If you would like to celebrate both occasions together, that would be a pretty tasty combination! On a more serious note, don't forget the Hurricane Expo at Indian River Mall this Saturday, June 9th. See our Community Calendar for details. ...Now, go help the economy and buy yourself an ice cream cone...and don't forget Father's Day on the 17th! That will surely boost the economy! Watch for our Father's Day FLASH Deals next Tuesday.

ROSE HARRIS
IS A POSITIVE PERSONRose Harris was recently nominated by Kristen Beck as a Positive Person. Kristen stated in her submission that Rose is always there when needed and has the best attitude. Even when a project is tedious, Rose makes it fun. I feel happier and more loved when Rose is nearby. She radiates strong positive energy." Rose moved from Ohio to Sebastian thirteen years ago. She is married to Christopher Harris and their union joined their two families totaling five children. Rose is yet another individual who exemplifies the resiliency of the human spirit when she made the best of a difficult time. Rose lost her full time job in 2009 and that was her impetus to get involved in her community; with a goal to make a difference. Involved? Indeed! Rose is a member of Sebastian Fishin' chics and serves as their Secretary. She was also recognized as their volunteer of the year last year. She also joined as a member of the Pelican Island Preservation Society and soon served on their Board of Directors and is currently serving as their Secretary. She serves on many different committees and has been instrumental in River Clean up, kids fishing clinics, Eco-Fest, and more. Rose used the free time after losing her job to complete the Florida Master Naturalist Program. She has a love for the outdoors and encourages everyone to get out and enjoy it and take some extra time to notice the wildlife and smell the fresh air. Mother Nature can be so incredibly inspiring and Rose can't resist the inspiration it provides. Rose enjoys kayaking, swimming, fishing and hiking. FLASH thinks she made a great decision to leave Ohio to come enjoy our plentiful outdoor recreation! However, there's no doubt that she left an impression back in Ohio as well. She was on CNN two years in a row, in her red dropped seat underwear, celebrating, The Great Outdoor Underwear Festival in Piqua, Ohio! Rose, thanks for taking the time to impact our community and those around you. There is little doubt that you are greatly appreciated and well deserving of our Positive Person Title! ...Thank you! |

Just in time for the damaging summer sun's rays and summer humidity. This week's Deal gives you 50% off on a keratin treatment and hair cut. This will give you a special glow both inside and out as you know you will be looking your best this summer. Our Enjoy keratin treatment is a formaldehyde and gluten-free formula, that infuses keratin into the cuticle creating smooth, silky, shiny and manageable hair. Relaxes curl and wave, removes frizz, blocks humidity and cuts down drying/styling time dramatically. Great for all hair types including color treated and chemically processed. Using an Enjoy shampoo and conditioner will help in the treatment lasting up to 3 months. Avoid swimming in chlorine or salt water, or using a shampoo that has sulfates during this period will also keep the elements from stripping the treatment out of the hair.

ESSENTIAL PHRASES IN 40 LANGUAGES
The BBC (British Broadcasting Co.) has an incredible website for learning a foreign language. The site offers many tips, but this particular one offers simple everyday phrases that a traveler might need. If you or a family member are traveling abroad, don't leave home without it. You can print them out or download the audio to your MP3 player. Just pick your language from the 40 offered (including some we never knew existed) and you'll be able to order a meal or ask a question (Where is the toilet?) in that 'native tongue'. This could be especially helpful for one of those lucky students taking a semester abroad. You may want to explore other learning tips by clicking on "home." Click Here

COMEDY ZONE @ RIVERSIDE THEATRE June 8th & 9th SHOWTIMES AT 7:30 and 9:30 $18 EACH Kurt Green
A self-described Army vet, actor, musician, substitute teacher and bad credit risk. This is where Kurt gets most of his material. He observes everyday life and takes it to the stage. Don't be surprised if something in your life appears in his act. Kurt entertains all age groups with his stand-up comedy, musical songs and parodies.
Kurt has appeared on BET's Comicview television show for five consecutive years. He was selected as a semi-finalist for the "2002 Laugh Riot" comedy competition for the Comedy Central Network and was also selected to appear in the Uptown Comedy Festival held at the Apollo Theater in New York City. Forrest Shaw
Born in Miami and raised as an only child by a single hippie mother, Forrest Shaw got into stand-up comedy after a decade of life as a marine biologist. Saving manatees and counting seagrass by day, at night, Forrest dedicated himself to the open mic circuit, quickly working his way into regular work with the South Florida Improvs. Forrest delivers witty and clever anecdotes of his unorthodox life with a wry smile. He shares his own faults and failures with the audience in hopes that they too can find the lighter side of those things in life, which sometimes seem too much to bear.
Forrest was in the 2010 South Beach Comedy Festival, the 2009 Just For Laugh's Comedy Festival showcase, and Sleepless Night 2009. Forrest was a finalist for the 2007 Comedy Central Open Mic Fight and the 2007 Las Vegas Comedy Festival Lucky 21 showcase. He was a finalist for the 2007 Carnival Comedy Challenge and the winner of the 2006 South Florida New Faces Comedy Contest.

FIFTY SHADES OF GREY ???
No doubt many of our FLASHERS are reading the first, second, and third of these books found on the New York Times Best Seller list. The Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy has taken the list by storm. To be quite frank, it's a little much for those of us who like our lives and books a little tamer. We have come up with a summer reading list that includes some of our favorites. We encourage our FLASHERS to send us an email and submit a book that we will feature on our 'FLASHERS Favorite Reads' next week.
|
|

SUMMER READING - BOOKS WE LIKE!
Some of these books may no longer be in the bookstores, but they are still on our bookshelf and include some of our all time favorites. They can always be ordered at a bookstore or found on Amazon.
THE BEACH HOUSE (fiction) by Mary Alice Monroe...Vero residents will identify with this poignant tale of family relationships featuring the owner of a home on the South Carolina coast, with turtle nests, hurricanes and all.
THE RIGHT WORDS AT THE RIGHT TIME (non-fiction) by Marlo Thomas and Friends... Celebrities from movies, sports and politics tell Marlo the advice they received that meant the most to them and even changed some lives. (Could be a good graduation gift.)
ATLAS SHRUGGED (fiction) by Ayn Rand...If you have never read this book, it has become a classic and is now required reading in several colleges. Written in 1957, it has elements of mystery, love, politics and science fiction. Whether or not you agree with Ms. Rand's philosophy,.. at least you will understand the significance of those T-shirts and signs you may have seen that read "Who is John Galt?"
I REMEMBER NOTHING and/or I FEEL BAD ABOUT MY NECK (non-fiction) by Nora Ephron. In these two books, this funny lady tackles the problems of aging that face all of us in her usual humorous style. (As a screenwriter, you can also enjoy her writing by renting one of her well known films: WHEN HARRY MET SALLY, SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE, YOU'VE GOT MAIL and JULIE AND JULIA.)
|
....AND SPEAKING OF MEMORY
If you're over fifty and forgetting names, don't worry. According to Dr. Alan Hilfer, chief psychologist at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, it's perfectly normal and not a sign of impending dementia. The same is true for forgetting where you put things...like your shoes or car keys...unless you find them in the refrigerator. If you find them there too often, you may want to see a neurologist!
|
COOL IDEA!
If you don't own a toaster oven, buy one. It will pay for itself in no time because it uses 50% less energy than a full size oven. The smaller size limits you somewhat on what you can cook in it, but it's great for roasting veggies, a small pork loin, a couple of fish filets, a cornish game hen or two, and even s'mores. That's just a few ideas, - and your kitchen will be much cooler! To find more toaster oven recipes. Click Here.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
Seen on the King Arthur Flour Website
Whisk together the following:
2 1/4 cups (9 1/2 ounces) King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
1/2 cup granulated sugar
ź cup light brown sugar, firmly packed
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
ź teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
3/4 teaspoon ground ginger
3/4 teaspoon salt
Place the following in a measuring cup or small bowl:
2 large eggs
3/4 cup water
1/3 cup vegetable oil
Whisk until well combined.
Stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and then add 1 cup grated carrots, lightly packed; about 2 medium-large carrots.
Note the word "stir;" beating isn't necessary, and will toughen your muffins. Spray your cupcake liners with Pam Spray once you have placed them in the pan. Drop about 2 tablespoons of the batter into each muffin cup, spreading it to cover the bottom. Dollop in the center a heaping tablespoon of filling; a level tablespoon cookie scoop works well here. Cover with enough batter to fill the muffin cups quite full. The batter will come to within about 1/4 inch of the top of each muffin cup. Sprinkle on a scattering of coarse white sparkling sugar across the top...it's a must when you're making muffins. The sugar adds crunch, glitter, and flavor. Delicious and gooey when warm or let it cool if you prefer the center a bit harder. ENJOY!
