|
Valerie Watkins
Publisher Vero Beach FLASH, LLC
It's hard to believe that tomorrow will be the first of June. It's also the first day of hurricane season! So, you might want to make plans to attend the Hurricane Expo at Indian River Mall on June 9th. See Community Calendar for more details.
The month of June is full of special occasions. Of course there are always lots of weddings, but there are also lots of graduations. Father's Day is June 17th, and the 'official' first day of summer is June 21st. You'll find many ideas for celebrating your special days in June in this issue.
Due to the slower summer months, we have decided to take a little hiatus from our printed 'Community Calendar.' Not to worry...We will start printing again in September and are thrilled that this community has embraced our calendar so enthusiastically! In the meantime, please reference our community calendar in each week's FLASH and email us if you have an event that you would like included. Click Here Enjoy!

 INGENIOUS!
ROBOTIC LIFEGUARDCheck out this video of Emily, the new Robotic Lifeguard that is being tested on several beaches on both the east and west coasts. Emily uses high-tech Navy technology, built in sonar devices, which scan the water for signs of a distressed swimmer. It can also be operated by remote control, reaches speeds up to 28 MPH; six times faster than a lifeguard can swim, and has built in speakers allowing for communication when the victim is reached. At only $3,500 this device is quite reasonably priced and is the positive outcome of a tragic accident that killed 13 year old Emily who was hit by a car. Her father partnered with the father of one of Emily's friends who had been working on this device. The pay-it-forward campaign with Emily's name attached to it brought in donations that made the project move forward. Yet, another example of the positive outcome that can result from the unbelievably raw and painful emotion that many feel after a tragic incident. This video also covers tips on how to safely get out of a rip current. Considering myself 'Beach Savvy," I have always heard how to swim parallel to the beach...I don't know that I have seen it presented in this way with aerial shots of actual rip currents. Very interesting. Check it out! Click Here. |

UNUSUAL GRADUATION GIFT IDEAS
PEARLS If you are looking for a gift for a girl graduating, consider pearl jewelry. Since the pearl is the 'jewel' for the month of June, it might be a nice way to remember the graduation date with a pair of earrings or a necklace. Nice cultured pearls are relatively inexpensive and are a gift she will use forever.
COSMETIC OR SHAVING KIT I've done this for grads myself and it was always most appreciated. Buy a case at the drugstore and fill it with miniature sizes of everything they might need if he/she is going away to college...soaps, shampoo, lotions, small first aid kit, razor, nail clippers, small mirror, small notebook and pen...you get the idea. You can make it as elaborate as you choose and the grad will have everything that might be needed until they can get settled.
MICROWAVE These small ovens have come down so much in price (as low as $40-$50) and they're a wonderful addition to a dorm room. (Check to be sure that the school allows one.) It will come in handy for popcorn, or hot chocolate and a bowl of oatmeal on a chilly morn!
MONEY is always a good idea, but be creative. Roll the cash or check in a plain piece of white paper and tie with a ribbon in their school colors to resemble a diploma.

Here is a fun site we found that has some creative ideas to keep the kids learn throughout summer... without them even realizing it! |
|
PLAN AHEAD TO WARD OFF SUMMER BOREDOM
This is a fun idea that was featured in Parent Magazine. It not only is a great way to keep the kids active and outdoors, but it also recycles those plastic bottles and puts them to good use. Simply add a few drops of food coloring to ten clear plastic bottles of water. Stand them up on flat ground, use party streamers as lane margins, and turn the kids lose! You score strikes for 1) Saving cash 2) Recycling 3) Keeping the kids happy and active!
ENJOY!

They come in packs of 10 for $49.50. (That's less than $5.00 a piece!) Kodak 800 speed film guarantees high quality pictures and they can be ordered directly from the Kodak website. These could be fun for other parties as well! (Maybe graduation?) To order, Click Here

FROM OUR FLASH ARCHIVES
DIPLOMA COOKIES
Whether it's a graduation from college, high school or even kindergarten, you might want to surprise a grad with these cookies. We have featured them in FLASH before, but we think it's an idea worth repeating. These rolled cookies are called 'tuiles'. Ready-made, they can be found in a Pepperidge Farm canister at your supermarket and all you have to do is tie on the ribbon. However, if you want to make them from scratch, Land O' Lakes has a recipe. To get it, Click Here.

GIFT FOR YOUR GRAD
from Martha Stewart
A scrapbook can help organize -- and proudly display -- the steady stream of photographs, artwork, awards, and other keepsakes that accrue during a young person's school years. The pages are made from notebook paper (ruled and graph styles) and can be secured to hole-punched card stock using double-sided tape. You can also put pages in plastic sleeves or use notebook dividers with pockets for additional memorabilia. School years can be hand printed or done with a rubber stamp.
EDITOR'S NOTE
I did this for my own 3 children a few years ago and also asked favorite teachers and other important people in my children's lives to send a letter for me to include. Not only did the kids LOVE their book, compiling it brought back some fun memories for me!

STRANGER THAN FICTION!
TED KACZYNSKI, HARVARD GRAD!
We can't make this stuff up! Harvard University's Alumni Association has issued an apology for references made by Ted Kaczynski, a graduate of Harvard class of 1962 in the school's latest directory. Kaczynski, nick-named the "Unabomber," submitted the entry for the directory himself. (Kaczynski was convicted in 1998 of killing three and injuring 23 in a mail-bombing spree that went on for three decades before his capture.) The alumni report, which was released before the class' 50th reunion, listed Kaczynski's occupation as "Prisoner." Under awards it read "8 life sentences" and his address is given as "Cell No. 04475-046" at the penitentiary in Florence, CO. A spokesman for Harvard apologized for including Kaczynski's references and for "any distress that the entry may have caused others."

We love this summer party dessert! The 'lawn chair' is a stick of striped gum. 'Sand' is graham cracker crumbs alongside a blue icing 'ocean'. The 'beach ball' can be any round candy or gumball.

FATHER'S DAY GIFT
Father's Day is June 16th and it will be here before you know it. We all know how hard it is to come up with a gift for Dad, so here's an idea. If your patio or deck is under cover, get him a mini refrigerator and fill it with his favorite drinks and snacks. (You can find them as low as $79 and with a separate freezer door for about $199.) While he's grilling, it would be great to have a cool beverage handy. The rest of the family can enjoy it too and it's a great way to keep swimming kids from dripping into the house!

VIDEO OF THE WEEK
TURTLES HATCH ON PENSACOLA BEACH
If you have never seen turtles hatch on our beach, this video from Pensacola will show you what you've missed. The eggs usually hatch at night and the babies find their way to the ocean instinctively by following the moon. This daytime hatching is very unusual, although we did see one on our beach a few years ago near the Disney resort. Since there's no moon, these little guys are being rescued as they scramble up through the sand. Sea Turtles can lay up to 120 eggs or more, but sadly, because of predators and other factors, only about 1 in 1,000 live to adulthood. However, if they make it, they can live 40 to 60 years. Enjoy this Florida miracle! Click Here
