Anyway, there are some 'legitimate' occasions to celebrate, so to view a complete list of all the special (as well as the silly) days in May, Click Here.
Five thousand copies of our printed calendar for MAY have been distributed. Some of our distribution points are below. Make sure you pick one up. Do it soon, because they go faster each month!

Do you have a drawer with different electrical cords crammed into it and now you don't have any idea what goes with what? Heaven forbid you throw any out. 'Cause you know as soon as you do, that will be the exact one you need tomorrow! Well, here is a great idea to keep those chargers organized. You can use any cardboard tubing to house the cords and you can write on the tube identifying to which electronic it belongs. Who knew it was so simple to get so organized?

SHARON DRAPER TO SPEAK
AT SAINT EDWARD'S SCHOOL TOMORROW
Sharon Draper books have won countless awards. Tears of a Tiger won both the Coretta Scott King Award and the American Library Association Best Book for Young Adults awards. Her book Forged by Fire won her a second Coretta Scott King Award. Her most recent book, Out of My Mind, was just voted the #1 favorite in the Florida Sunshine State voting completed last Friday. Named by President Clinton as U.S. Teacher of the Year in 1997, she went on to become an author known to millions. Writing for both children and young adults, her topics are sometimes controversial, but always elicit strong emotion and portray tough real-life issues: gang life and interracial dating, child abandonment and illiteracy.

IT'S WATERMELON SEASON!
HOW TO PICK OUT A WATERMELON
In the U.S., watermelon is now available year-round with imported watermelon available from October through June. However, May begins the peak season for domestic grown watermelon. To buy a good one, look for one that is a creamy yellow on the bottom. If the bottom is white, it's not fully ripe.
WATERMELON AND YOUR DIET
According to the WEB MD website, foods that are high in water content take up more room and make you feel fuller. This signals the body that you've had enough to eat and leaves less room for other foods. Many raw fruits and vegetables are chock-full of water and nutrients, but low in calories. Watermelon is a great example. It's a rich source of the antioxidant lycopene and adds some vitamins A and C to your day, too. Enjoy!
Interesting fact: The U.S. is the leading exporter of watermelon; 88% of U.S. exports go to Canada, the rest go to Japan, Mexico, Russia, Bermuda, and France. |

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Baked Ziti
Even if you aren't a 'full-time' vegetarian, a meatless meal once a week can be good for your family and your pocketbook. This classic Italian supper comes together quickly. You can bake garlic bread alongside the ziti, and a green salad is tossed in minutes.
Ingredients
- Coarse salt and ground pepper
- 8 ounces ziti rigate (ridged) or other short pasta
- 1 cup part-skim ricotta
- 1 large egg, lightly beaten
- 3/4 cup finely grated Parmesan
- 1 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella
- 1 jar (24 to 26 ounces) best-quality tomato sauce (about 3 1/2 cups)
Directions
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook pasta until al dente, according to package instructions; drain and reserve.
- In a small bowl, combine ricotta, egg, 1/4 cup Parmesan, and half the mozzarella; season with salt and pepper.
- In the bottom of a shallow 2-quart casserole dish, spread half the tomato sauce. Top with ziti, then ricotta mixture and remaining sauce. Sprinkle with remaining 1/2 cup Parmesan and remaining mozzarella. Place casserole on a rimmed baking sheet, and bake until top is browned and sauce is bubbling, 20 to 25 minutes.
NOTE: Thawed frozen spinach may be added to the mix before baking and for extra protein, add 1 cup of cottage cheese.

Studies have shown over and over again that children involved with caring adults achieve better academic grades, are less likely to miss school, have a lower incidence of drug use, and are involved in less criminal activity. The Community-Based program allows volunteers to provide "Littles" with one-on-one time and attention in their communities, typically two to four hours a month. During these unstructured outings they cultivate relationships that provide children with skills to manage every day challenges. Through simple friendship, "Bigs" experience the joy of helping children discover a world of possibilities and opportunities. The School-Based program is another volunteer opportunity. Volunteers can become reading mentors, and open up the world of books for a child in kindergarten, first, or second grade. Experience the joy that simple moments of friendship can bring. You can sponsor change in your community, Imagine the possibilities, what will you start? For additional information about Big Brothers Big Sisters, or to save your place now because there are a limited number of spots available for golfers, visit us online at www.bbbsbigs.org or call 772-770-6000.
