Vero Beach FLASH, LLC

Hello FLASHERS!  As many of you know,  'Team FLASH' is composed of family and friends and we feel like we know many of you from your correspondence and from seeing your email periodically cross our screens. My belief is that where a person spends his or her time and money is where the heart can also usually be found. That means a big piece of my heart is with you and this community. I spend a great deal of my time each week communicating with many of you and researching in order to bring you FLASH on Thursdays.  This week Team FLASH has spent less time than usual at this task. We had a dear family friend pass away yesterday in Miami where I have been the last several days staying with my sister in the hospital as she recoups from surgery. If I have missed communication with you this week...please forgive me. I will certainly be in touch within the next couple of days. Your emails are extremely important and I love getting them. Please remember to send us information on May/June events that you know about. Our  deadline is Friday to make it onto our print calendar. Click Here to send me an email.

Remember to check the community Calendar below for upcoming events. There are several that did not make the printed calendar. As always, there is a lot going on and Team FLASH encourages you to get together with those you love and enjoy life together! We all often hear that you never know what is going to happen when you walk out your door in the morning. So, our little thought for the day is to always make the most of each day and hold those you love close! Nothing you haven't heard before, but what power and happiness can be found in those familiar words! ENJOY Life this week and know that FLASH is always here for you and that our mission is to treat you like family and friends and to have you think of FLASH as the same in return!

NOW SHOWING!
"Tragedy tomorrow, comedy tonight!" Broadway's greatest farce is light fast-paced, witty, irreverent and one of the funniest musicals ever written. Comedy reigns supreme when a thoroughly disarming slave named Pseudolus schemes to gain his freedom by helping his master's son get the girl he desires. With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, this hilarious slapstick farce is filled with outrageous puns and gags that will keep you laughing all the way home! TIP FOR THE MEN
CHIVALRY IS NOT DEAD!
This pic is from the 1940s, but ladies, including your wives, still love to be shown the traditional courtesies by a man. As our society becomes more casual, chivalry sometimes seems to have slipped through the cracks. Here are some polite gestures that are especially appreciated and please pass them on to your sons!
Do: Guide her through the room. Put your hand on the small of her back as you're walking together at a party or entering a restaurant. Make sure to keep your hand on her waist and not below!
Do: Move her to the inside of the sidewalk. Every woman likes to think that you'd rather she not be run over by a truck. Make this move and she'll know it's the truth and it's a perfect way to show her your protective side.
Do: Open the car door for her. Any guy can and should hold a car door open for a woman. If you don't do it every time, at least do it on special occasions.
Do: Allow her to go first. When entering or exiting an elevator or building, always step aside and let the ladies (even strangers) go first.
Do: Pull out her chair at a restaurant. Wait until she's seated before you sit down.
Do: Remove your hat when inside. This means baseball and golf caps and any other headgear, - even in McDonalds!

JANIE GOULD'S "FLORIDAYS" IS FITTING FINALE TO HISTORICAL SOCIETY'S "TELLING TALES" SERIES

Sunday, April 22nd @ 2:00

The Indian River County Historical Society is proud to announce that local journalist and oral historian Janie Gould will present "Floridays: Tales Told Under the Sun" on Sunday,  April 22.  The program will begin at 2 pm at the historic Hallstrom House, and will be followed by refreshments.  Gould's presentation is the final program in the Society's 2011-2012 series "Telling Tales."

Gould, a former president of the Historical Society, is a fourth generation native of Florida and a longtime resident of Vero Beach.  After earning a journalism degree at the University of Florida and working for more than 20 years as a newspaper and magazine writer and editor, she joined the staff of WQCS radio station in 2004 to conduct an oral history project.  From that project, she created the popular "Floridays" show, which is heard on WQCS and on "Florida Frontiers," the statewide program of the Florida Historical Society.  During her presentation at the Hallstrom House, (1723 Old Dixie Highway- One mile south of Oslo Rd.) she will share stories that she has collected from Indian River County residents over the past eight years.

Tickets for the event are $15 for Historical Society members and $20 for nonmembers.  For ticket reservations or more information, please contact the Indian River County Historical Society at 772/778-3435 or indianriverhisto@bellsouth.net.

Peanut Butter SandwichHEALTH TIP
PEANUT BUTTER - GO0D FOR YOU?
At least five major studies confirm that eating peanuts or peanut butter can lower risk for coronary heart disease. "Eating peanut butter or peanuts has been associated with lower total cholesterol, lower LDL or 'bad' cholesterol, and lower triglycerides, all of which are associated with lower cardiovascular disease risk," says Richard Mattes, Ph.D., R.D., a professor of nutrition at Purdue University. When Dr. Mattes offered a group of volunteers seven different snack foods (including peanut butter, rice cakes, pickles, and almonds), study participants reported that peanut butter or peanuts were much more filling  than the other choices and tamed hunger for much longer. It may be high in fat and calories, but if a small amount can quell hunger, that might explain why dieters seem more satisfied with weight-loss plans that include the spread.

SAVINGS TIP
MAXIMIZE YOUR CUSTOMER REWARDS
Sign up for every free customer rewards program you can. Even if you rarely shop at that place, having a rewards card for it will eventually net you some coupons and discounts. Here's the basic game plan for maximizing these programs: create an e-mail address just for these mailings  so you don't 'junk-up' your personal mail, collect every card you can, and then check that account for extra coupons whenever you're ready to shop.

AN IDEA WE LIKE - COMBINE REWARDS CARDS

If you read the post above and, like us, you already have several reward cards and your key chain looks like it's carrying a poker deck, here's a terrific idea! At MY KEY RING THING, you can transfer up to 6 rewards cards to one wallet size card. It will take about 5 minutes to register your stores and the numbers under each barcode and then the respective barcodes will appear. You can then order the laminated card online or by phone or check, and you will receive it in the mail in about 3 weeks. Endorsed by GOOD MORNING AMERICA and WOMAN'S DAY,  the card will cost $5.95. VIDEO OF THE WEEK

Elton John is known for composing a song very quickly. In this video, a member of the audience challenges him to turn the directions for using an oven into a musical composition. Notice how the tempo picks up as Elton gets more into it. Incredible! Click Here

CAR TRAVEL ORGANIZER

FLASH has sung the praises of shoe bags before when used as organizers for everything from gift wrap and ribbons to bathroom bottles and jars. We especially like this idea from Martha Stewart as you make your summer vacation plans. This canvas shoe bag is just right for keeping toys and other items tidy and easy to reach in the car. The 16-pocket organizer was cut in half and hemmed at the bottom. A ribbon loop at the top is hung over the back of a front seat. Long ribbons stitched to the bottom corners reach around the seat back and tie in front. The pockets can hold cassette players and headphones, maps, playing cards, coloring books and pens and a flashlight.

NOTE: Use iron on tape to hem or a clear plastic shoe bag may not need hemming.
