Saint Patrick's Day is this Saturday! May the luck of the Irish hold you tight.  Irish blessings are many and I never tire of them.  Here is one in honor of Saint Patrick's Day.

May your pockets be heavy and your heart be light,

May good luck pursue you each morning and night.
~Irish Blessing

March also ushered in MARCH MADNESS; the NCAA finals. With that in mind ... here is a fun fact. The first basketball game was played in March of 1892.

Here is another 'first' that you might not be aware  of. The BARBIE doll was introduced on Mar. 9, 1959.  (She's 53 years old and doesn't have a single wrinkle!) "Lucky" gal!

Our 'hard copy' Community Calendar for March has now been distributed around town and are definitely being snatched up. If you haven't yet picked up a  free copy to clip on your fridge,  please email us to let us know and we will help you find one.  We are already working on our April calendar. If you are interested in advertising in it, we have a couple of spots left. Call us for more information (772) 589-9602.

MAKE YOUR OWN OIL CLOTH
Oil cloth was widely used in the 50's and 60's for water-repellent table cloths. Today the selection is limited. But, with this week's craft idea it will be easy to turn your favorite fabrics into placemats, table cloths, baby bibs and more. To create this product is as simple as following the three steps below.

1. Stretch fabric onto frame for stability and smoothness
.
2. With long brush strokes, cover entire piece of fabric on the good side with linseed oil, let dry, repeat
.
3. Once it's good and coated, remove from frame, trim edges and use as

TURTLE NESTING SEASON HAS BEGUN

Turtle nesting season began almost two weeks ago and the Florida Wildlife officials are urging everyone to be careful of the nesting turtles who head to our shores to lay their eggs on our beaches. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, leatherback turtle nests have already been documented this year on beaches in Indian River, St. Lucie and Martin counties. If you own oceanfront property, remember that you must turn off your outside floodlights and have window coverings that that reduce the glare and brightness of interior lights.  An interesting nesting fact. Females can lay multiple nests during the nesting season.

Sunday, April 8th is Easter and it is just a couple of weeks away. We have a couple of Easter posts this week that will take a little bit of planning on your end. We will certainly have some more hippity hoppity wonderful Easter ideas in our next two issues of FLASH as well. If you have any Easter traditions or ideas that you would like to share with our FLASHERS, please email us. We love to hear from you!
PLAN NOW TO GROW YOUR EASTER GRASS

Enjoy the wonders of spring by growing your own Easter grass.  You can grow it in your Easter basket, flower pots, egg carton or a container that you might want to transform into a centerpiece! Let your imagination lose on this one! It takes at least 10 days to get a good batch of grass started. So, plan ahead.

What you'll need:

  • Cellophane or piece of plastic for baskets
  • Grass seed, rye seed or wheat seed
  • Vermiculite or potting soil
  • Clean spray bottle
  • Water
  • A sunny window

     How to make it:

  1. Cut your cellophane or plastic large enough to line the basket plus stick out over the top edge by about one inch. If you use colored cellophane. Make sure you use one piece to prevent leaking.
  2. If you can get it, fill with vermiculite which is much lighter than soil, and is available at gardening departments. It also stays moist easily.
  3. Cover the top with the seed, sprinkle a 1/4 inch layer of vermiculite over the seed, and water it with the spray bottle. Mist every day.
NIGHT-TIME EGG HUNT PARTY
Here is an incredibly fun idea that offers a twist on that 'regular' morning egg hunt. It is an idea that is enjoyed by all ages, young and old. It is even enjoyed by teens which are a difficult age to appeal to. So, start  planning now and invite your friends and your children's friends over for a night-time egg hunt. Hide filled eggs outside and tell your guests to bring flashlights. Then set turn them loose on an unforgettable egg hunt. You can of course hide a golden egg and have a special prize for the person who finds it.  Our Flash family has done this and it's so much fun! You may even find the adults joining in!

   The Music Man
      March 1 - 18

A loving tribute to the small towns of yesteryear, The Music Man follows the plans of fast-talking "Professor" Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying uniforms and musical instruments for a boys band he vows to lead. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian, the town librarian, and decides to stay and face the music when the townsfolk get wind of his scheme. Filled with classic musical fun, tender romance, and barbershop quartets.  The Music Man is the Perfect All-American Musical
    The Gin Game
     March 15- 25

A Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning drama, The Gin Game is an engrossing drama full of wit and sentimentality. Weller Martin and Fonsia Dorsey, two elderly residents at a nursing home for seniors, strike up an unlikely alliance. Since neither seems to have any other friends, they start up a series of gin rummy games on the home's sunlit porch. While playing, they engage in lengthy conversations about their families and their lives in the outside world, and their game of gin becomes an emotional battle between two people who long to be winners just once more before time runs out
   Rapunzel & Me
    March 23 - 25

Riverside Children's Theatre will premiere a new musical based on the beloved fairy tale Rapunzel. Generations of children have heard the story of a girl with long flowing hair who was locked in a tower by a witch. However, this inventive new musical will show that there may be more to the story than anyone knew before! This tale is brought to life with new twists and turns.

ALL ABOUT BOATING

With spring and summer right around the corner, there is little doubt that many of you will be spending more time out on the water. Some of you are probably considering a boat purchase. This is a fabulous website with a great deal of information about boating. It has information on just about anything...even how to persuade your spouse to buy a boat. If that proves successful, then continue on to gather knowledge to learn best practices for responsible boat maintenance and care. HEALTH TIP
PRESCRIPTION VS. GENERIC DRUGS
Generic drugs are usually a good substitute for prescriptions and are certainly less expensive. However, did you know that they are not necessarily identical? Prevention magazine reported that it's important to know the difference. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if it has a Narrow Therapeutic Index (NIT). This means that the effective dose is not much lower than a dose that can cause serious side effects. If there's any doubt, you're better off sticking to the prescription.

SAVE ON WEDDING EXPENSES
This time of year seems to be a popular time to plan weddings. However, the cost of weddings is going out of sight! If a family member or someone else you know is getting married, here are a few tips that might help.
TOTAL EXPENSE - If you're the parent of the bride, set an amount that she can spend, with the understanding that she can keep the balance for the start of her new life.
WEDDING GOWN - It can be a lovely tradition to pass a gown down in the family, or a shop that carries vintage clothes might offer a lovely choice.
GROOM'S ATTIRE - Tuxedo rental has become so expensive that you may be able to purchase a suit for just a little more. (This practical idea is also being used for the groomsmen.)
TIME OF DAY - As a rule, food for a brunch, luncheon or daytime reception is less expensive than an evening buffet or seated dinner. Also, If you're serving alcohol, usually your guests will not drink as much at this hour and the champagne can be stretched as a punch or in Mimosas (Champagne and Orange Juice).
FLOWERS - The bride does not need to carry an elaborate bouquet. A simple arrangement with a few flowers and ribbon streamers is just as attractive and often offers a sophisticated simplicity that makes a big statement. The bridesmaids can even carry a single rose or other flower with ribbon streamers to match their gowns.
FLOWERS FOR THE CHURCH - Consider using living plants. Palms provide a lovely background and they may even be rented. At one wedding, assorted blooming rosebushes in white wicker baskets were used. They later became a rose garden at the couple's new home!

Each year Bloomburg Business publishes ranks of colleges for "return on investment", based on cost of tuition. It is a study of graduates' income over the 30 years following graduation.  So who ended on top?

2. Harvey Mudd College*
3. MIT
4. Princeton
5. Stanford
All eight members of the Ivy League,- Princeton, Dartmouth, Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, and Brown landed in the top 30.
*NOTE: In case you didn't know, (We didn't), Harvey Mudd is a private liberal-arts college focusing on mathematics, the physical and biological sciences, and engineering located in Claremont, CA bordering Los Angeles.
KIDS' CRAFT FOR SPRING BREAK
Here's a fun project that will give the kids something to do during Spring Break. Let them make their own Memory Matching game  Using sturdy poster board, cut out 24  2"x2" squares. Have the child draw, color or paint the same simple design on one side only on two squares. Then do two more with a different design, then two more, etc. until you have 12 sets of two matching squares. The game is played by mixing up the squares and laying them face down. The players take turns, turning up only two squares at a time so both players can see the designs. Then the next player does the same thing. When a player gets a match, he keeps those squares. The one with the most matches wins.
NOTE: Some simple design ideas are a lollypop, ice cream cone, flower, tree, apple, heart, bug, orange, banana, or make them all with  balls, but in different colors.

BIRTHDAY PANCAKES
Start a new family tradition and make this your special birthday breakfast!

makes about 12 pancakes
  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup yellow cake mix
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • pinch of salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1-2 cups milk
  • assorted sprinkles

Combine flour, cake mix, baking powder, sugar and salt in a bowl and mix. Add 1 cup of milk, egg and vanilla extract and stir until smooth. You want the batter to look like regular pancake batter; not too thin, not too thick. This will vary greatly on the brand of cake mix you use. Start with 1 cup of milk and add more if needed.  *You may need to have small taste test to see if the pancakes are flavored enough, if not, add a little more yellow cake mix until desired flavor is reached**

Preheat a skillet on medium heat (or an electric grilled and turn it to 250 degrees). Fold desired amount of sprinkles into batter. Pour batter in 1/4 cup measurements onto skillet and let cook until bubbles form on top, about 2-3 minutes. Flip and cook for 1 minute more. Serve with vanilla glaze.

GLAZE
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • assorted sprinkles
Mix milk, extract and powdered sugar until glaze forms. You may need to add a little more sugar or water/milk to reach desired consistency. I needed to add more milk.  Mix into glaze and drizzle on pancakes.

Enjoy!
