SAINT EDWARDS RECEIVES $500,000 FOR FACULTY FUND The Edward E. Ford Foundation of Portland Maine, which is dedicated to encouraging and improving secondary education in U.S. independent schools, has awarded Saint Edward's School a challenge grant of $50,000. Saint Edward's is among the 20-25 independent schools nationwide chosen this year to receive a grant from the Foundation.
In addition, Saint Edward's has received the proceeds from two life insurance policies gifted to the School by John and Barbara Morrison and an additional gift from their daughter Angela Waldrop '98. The planned gift from the Morrison Family and the matching funds from the E.E. Ford Foundation will be used to establish a $500,000 endowed fund for faculty professional development - directed toward faculty summer stipends - to support the training of the faculty to attend conferences, work on advanced degrees and pursue specialized training in their fields. The income from the endowed fund, which will be named The Morrison Waldrop Faculty Summer Stipend Endowed Fund, will provide approximately $20,000 to $25,000 annually to fund a wide array of opportunities for faculty to enhance their teaching skills and pursue continuing education in their fields of study.

COLLEGE MAJORS AND JOBS
This chart from CBS MONEYWATCH shows the wide disparity in unemployment rates between college majors. It should come as no surprise in the current housing market that Architecture majors are the highest unemployed at 13.9 percent. The chart also shows the difference in unemployment rates for grads who have experience (like an internship) or a graduate degree. To learn more, Click Here.

n. Baker's Secret for Soft Butter
When you're ready to bake, waiting for cold butter to soften can seem to take forever. Here's how to hurry the process along: Over a mixing bowl, shred the amount of butter you need on a grater. The little pieces will soften faster than a solid stick. In no time, the butter will be bake-worthy.

WHERE'S GEORGE?
If you have too much time on your hands, (No, we don't know anyone who does either!) this is an interesting web site that tracks the travels of dollar bills through circulation. This could be a fun thing to do with your children while honing some geography skills! Its users, most of whom mark their bills with the web site address, follow the adventures of their money after it leaves their hands. (Reasonably marking bills is legal.) There is also much more on the site to check out, like forums, user profiles, and the George Store. To begin your dollar's journey, log in at www.wheresgeorge.com

HEALTH TIP
WHAT ARE PROBIOTICS?
Probiotics are microorganisms such as bacteria or yeast that are believed to improve health. Yogurt is one of the best sources of probiotics. The idea of taking live bacteria or yeast may seem strange at first. After all, we take antibiotics and use antibacterial substances to fight bacteria, but probiotics are "good" bacteria that, among other things, aid in digestion. Although more research is needed, according to Mayo Clinic, there's encouraging evidence that probiotics may also help:
- Treat diarrhea, especially following treatment with certain antibiotics
- Prevent and treat vaginal yeast infections and urinary tract infections
- Treat irritable bowel syndrome
- Reduce bladder cancer recurrence
- Speed treatment of certain intestinal infections
- Prevent and treat eczema in children
- Prevent or reduce the severity of colds and flu
FROZEN VS. NON-FROZEN YOGURT
According to the LIVESTRONG.COM website, frozen yogurt has less protein and calcium than non-frozen yogurt, but may have as many live and active cultures as non-frozen yogurt! Because frozen yogurt is flash-frozen rather than frozen slowly, the probiotics are not destroyed during the freezing process. Instead, describes the National Yogurt Association, the cultures go into a dormant state in the cold, and then, when you eat the yogurt and heat the cultures back to body temperature, they become active once again and provide the same probiotic health benefits as non-frozen yogurt. Some manufacturers, however, heat-treat their yogurt prior to freezing, and the heating process kills the yogurt cultures. Look for the National Yogurt Association's "Live & Active Cultures" seal on your frozen yogurt to be sure you are buying a product that supplies the health benefits of probiotics.

VIDEO OF THE WEEK
The political scene is already wearing on us! So... to lighten the mood, why not enjoy a few laughs as you look back at some of the bloopers of past politicians as far back as President Eisenhower. Rick Perry's "1, 2, ...can't remember the 3rd" keeps him in good company!

DID YOU KNOW!
Don't fill up if you see the tanker!
If you happen to see a gasoline tanker filling the tanks at your local gas station, come back another day or go to a different station. As the station's underground tanks are being filled, the turbulence can stir up sediment. Sediment in your gas can clog fuel filters and fuel injectors, causing poor performance and possibly necessitating repairs!
